I don't really understand the loan fee idea for younger players. Sure, Joe Cole on loan to Lille might require a fee, but if you're a club looking to get your younger players some first-team experience, it's a bit cheeky to charge for it. The loaning club are doing you a huge favour by giving the player game time, surely that's payment enough?

AGREE. ^^^^^ this.

well maybe we can blame Nigel Pearson for the Peter Gulacsi deal then. does not the consumer act allow for returning dodgy goods and getting a full refund ?

For a position like goalkeeper I think it's important to have someone permanent in place. With Basso's situation I'd hope to sign a permanent keeper in Jan, followed by two strikers if Simpson goes and then an "all rounder" defender for cover at CB and RB... Midfield is fine by my reckoning.

That's a lot of signings... especially if we're looking for goalscorers up front... NB's got a job on his hands.

Watching them again I find Gulasci at fault for both. Not to the extent where he made a terrible error, just that someone else would have done much, much better.
He supposedly made a 'magnificent' initial save for the first goal.. all I see if a very weak shot head almost straight to him, and he just parries it straight back out..

Am I all alone on these thoughts? <laugh>

If that is the conclusion you come to, with thr benefit of replay and slow motion then you know absolutely **** all about football.
The first goal was down to the fact that we are a VERY intelligent team (Barmby asked us to be intelligent) so we will not head the ball – GK never had a chance.
The second goal came low and fast, OUR defence had forced Gulacsi onto his line and he made a reflex save, the following shot was excellent and would have beaten any GK in similar circumstances.
Using your logic, Southampton should be sacking their GK after the way he let in our goal.
Conclusion is: you know nowt and are trying to corrupt facts to support your general dislike of Gulacsi – we need to strengthen, yes – but leave out the bullshit! :police:

IMO, The biggest issue between Gulacsi and the back 4 is communication or a lack of it. At Forest for example and sat just behind the goal it was so evident that Basso is very very vocal. I dont think Gulacsi is at all. Even at Derby PG DID not know weather to stick or twist at times. NB will know the issues here but he has to give the lad a fair crack especially if Basso is not fit. Maybe Basso will have to play one and rest one if the injury does not go away. Its a quandry for sure at the moment. We shall all just have to wait and see what happens over the next 2 months. We shall only know who is going to do what in the league come the end of Jan. Interesting times ahead both on and off the pitch.

Communication plays a part and has done for at least 5 seasons, but our lack of height is the biggest single failing, as in the first goal. Look at Chester (again) for the second; he is in the best position to get rid but is totally one-footed and as much use as a chocolate fire-guard! :emoticon-0127-lipss

New keeper, new skipper/mid-field general, repalcement attackers - just another day at the office! :emoticon-0103-cool:

will be keeping an eye on the fa cup 2nd round this weekend as there are many players in the lower leagues who can perform in the championship, Fleetwood Towns winger looks class and maybe worth a 2nd look for starters.

I hate that accusation being levelled at someone, just because two people have a different opinion on an incident in a game, it obviously doesn't mean one of them knows **** all about football. I've watched the goals a few times now, Gulasci can be let off both, but he wasn't brilliant either. On the first he stopped the initial shot, which was a decent stop, but he parried it straight into the patch of an oncoming player, which wasn't so great. On the second, both central defenders were more at fault than him, but he had no idea if he should come for it or wait for it, which is often his problem.

I've stated several times that I don't think Gulasci's biggest problem is his individual errors, but his overall decision making is poor, he lacks confidence and that reflects in the confidence of the players in front of him. I'm pretty sure that with Basso in goal we wouldn't have lost both the last two games and for that reason alone, I wish there was someone else in goal.

Is Basso fit enough to play today? I know it's likely he'd be on the bench anyway, but wondered how his tendinitis is at the moment.
