Once they're in the Championship and doing well, it's almost impossible for us to touch them. We've got to find the next Hamer

Nicolas Raskin at Standard Liege is an example of a player we could sign. You’re right, once they’re in the Championship and had one good season, they get slapped with 8 figure price tags and won’t make sideways moves to other Championship clubs.

I just liked the dynamism, one of the reasons I think Longman has struggled so many games.

I do feel for Longman. He's been playing under Shota in a back 5, and I always thought he was infinitely better on the left rather than the right. Under Grant, he played much higher and him and KLP switched often and I think that suited them both but since Fleming's arrival that's stopped.

This highlights the issue we have, chance creation. We really need some creative players in this window, it would be pointless spending big on a striker that doesn’t get any chances to score.

While I agree with your point that's not quite what xG indicates. Ignoring the fact we're one of the few teams that would have held their position, if anything, that table suggests we should have scored more goals from the chances we created.

We scored less than we should have from the chances we made which supports the need for a better striker, and we conceded less than we should have which supports the fact we have a stronger defence than our league position would suggest. Of course adding more creativity would add even more chances to score more goals, but that suggests we weren't clinical enough.

Let’s be glad we weren’t as wasteful as West Brom though..

It appears that metric, a really interesting one, underplays teams that play on the counter attack - see Forest, Huddersfield and to a lesser extent City.
