He wasn’t worth paying 17m at the time for. He became worth through playing for us. We added to the value He was worth a 5m gamble. Not a 17m one. If we have been quoted 17m we wouldn’t have signed him (couldn’t have either)
Maybe the thought is CSKA won't be able or willing to pay that, perhaps hasn't played that much since RR left? (Edit: He hasn't played sine late Oct according T'markt, fracture being cited.) We could offer (less) cash now rather than Chelsea waiting for £17m in June
According to Wiki, he was on a season long loan in Moscow but has been cut short after he has played 9 times for them scoring once. He's a midfielder who has played at every level for England up to U20. He was born in Poole so may have been a Saints fan but more likely a Mini-Skate.

No - I don’t think you can take a player from another club and give them a trial without consent. And it isn’t going to happen with a Chelsea player.

I don’t think they were waiting for or expecting 17m in June. CSKA has paid that kind of fee once. 20m. Next highest was 10m. So they were immensely unlikely to ever sign him. He would have to have torn it up for them to push to that amount
I know I’m tempting fate at this late stage but this must be the most relaxed Jan transfer window ever for a Saints fan? “Poaching” of our players is almost nonexistent, apart from the Broja NU BS & possible gains, continue to be rather positive & have a nice feel good about them, albeit nothing finalised.
Oh boy, this trips the “Too Much Sense” transfer plausibility detection system. For sure passes the sniff test. He’s an England age group player so Crocker will have an encyclopaedia on him, he played with Tino at Chelsea who have bizarrely become our feeder club and the price quoted is enough that the new owners can make it a statement that we’re beyond the £5-10m cheap punts and ready to speculate in a higher tier of young prospect. He’s also playing in a role we need. Plus he’s clearly okay at pressing as he was brought to Moscow by Rangnick. I’m off to watch some footage!
