He was not a lazy player for us. He was always running, back tracking, defending, as well as scoring. I cannot believe how some people view certain players, preferring only to remember them at their worst. It is true however, that after a particular crucial injury, after the FA Cup Final season, under which he played for half a season incidentally, he was never the same player for Saints after that. Then he went to find fortunes elsewhere, as Lowe & Co found £6M being dangled in front of them too tempting. To be fair, it turned out to be good business for Saints in the end. Wonder whose pocket that went into..?

BTW, I have read Gordon Strachan's book. There is no mention of Beatts having a bad attitude or of being of low intelligence. In fact, in one humourous quip, Strachan thanks Mr and Mrs Beattie for giving birth to James.

That's how I remember him too, not lazy but Beatts was a bit of a puzzle to be honest. I think it was all about confidence with him because he was so inconsistant. When he was on form he could score from anywhere and the ball/luck would run for him. He scored some absolute belters, anyone remember away at Sunderland from about 40yds?
When he was off form he was awful, his control was non existant and he would then go on long periods without a goal.
I guess Saints were more patient with him than the clubs that paid big money.

Oh, and although the Middlesbrough and Everton games were bad, the Villa game from that relegation season was the one that nearly made me self combust with anger.

Was that the one where we threw a 2 goal lead in stoppage time? Redknapp's first game?

Good god we were awful. <laugh>

Yeah 2-0 up going into stoppage time, didn't realise it was Arry's first game though! We threw away so many leads that season, was it Villa at home when we 2-0 up at half time n lost 3-2? Was a victim of 'Fergie' time at Highbury as well where Delap scored 2 headers....only would've taken us to hold on to one of those games for us to stay up!

Saying that, depressing as it was at the time, I wouldn't change any of it for the world now <ok>

Thing is with that Villa game if I remember rightly we were absolutely fantastic in the first half! Like it was 2 different teams!

Same here Fran! His career nosed dived after he left. Fact is he was/is a lazy player; I do not think never really tried to set-up to the next level and, if you have read GS's book; not too intelligent and questionable work rate for the other team members. Compare him to Ricky Lambert and look how much he has worked on his game and fitness over the past two seasons - no comparison whatsoever.

Not too intelligent football wise but I seem to rememer reading somewhere that he was considering studying medicine when he left school

PS no more reminders of how we used to throw the game away in the last minute PLEASE!

Yes I was at that game...back when I shared a ST with my bro and we went along with our mum each week. It was written in the stars for him to score really, but worse was what happened at the end of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4CV30RGTEo.

Still the lowest I have ever felt after walking away from a game at SMS

I still haven't forgiven Crouch for being greedy and taking the shot when he could have ran it in to the corner :emoticon-0106-cryin

How about a good memory of an Everton game? This was a really good game, with Fernandes scoring a cracker just into stoppage time, you beauty.

That 2-2 video typifies everything about why we got relegated. A selfish side of individuals. Crouch was incredibly selfish not running to the corner and time wasting. But then when it's kicked out we have 3 players behind the ball. That team was an embarrassment.

Yeah, I have, but if someone had mentioned that WGS had written about Crouch, saying he lacked a little bit of grey matter upstairs, I would quite agree. I have never thought Crouch the brightest of footballers. His brains are most definitely in his feet. And to paraphrase my old Dad's words... down there's for dancing, upstairs is for thinking.

Is he worth asking back as a coach? For the strikers...

Can I assume that was meant as a joke? He had a couple of good seasons with us but was not the greatest really. I've never seen anyone who miss-timed his jumps as regularly. I'm sure he needed contact lenses or something.

When he was fired up he was OK but it didn't happen often enough. I don't think he has anything to offer our current strikers. Lambert is a far greater player all round.

BTW said:
TSS - Strachan in his book compares the work rate and attitude of Ormrod with that of Beattie - he complains that Beattie refused or did not comprehend the need to track back or drop deep - whereas Ormrod always gives 100%. I have no 'axe to grind' with Beattie - but I think its a shame that he did not meet his potential.
