That's how I remember him too, not lazy but Beatts was a bit of a puzzle to be honest. I think it was all about confidence with him because he was so inconsistant. When he was on form he could score from anywhere and the ball/luck would run for him. He scored some absolute belters, anyone remember away at Sunderland from about 40yds? When he was off form he was awful, his control was non existant and he would then go on long periods without a goal. I guess Saints were more patient with him than the clubs that paid big money. Oh, and although the Middlesbrough and Everton games were bad, the Villa game from that relegation season was the one that nearly made me self combust with anger.
Yeah 2-0 up going into stoppage time, didn't realise it was Arry's first game though! We threw away so many leads that season, was it Villa at home when we 2-0 up at half time n lost 3-2? Was a victim of 'Fergie' time at Highbury as well where Delap scored 2 headers....only would've taken us to hold on to one of those games for us to stay up! Saying that, depressing as it was at the time, I wouldn't change any of it for the world now
Thing is with that Villa game if I remember rightly we were absolutely fantastic in the first half! Like it was 2 different teams!
Why are you all depressing yourselves? It was one of my abiding memories, but I had nearly expunged it from my memory.
On a happier note, here's 10 minutes of Beattie's goals for us:
Not too intelligent football wise but I seem to rememer reading somewhere that he was considering studying medicine when he left school PS no more reminders of how we used to throw the game away in the last minute PLEASE!
I still haven't forgiven Crouch for being greedy and taking the shot when he could have ran it in to the corner
How about a good memory of an Everton game? This was a really good game, with Fernandes scoring a cracker just into stoppage time, you beauty.
That 2-2 video typifies everything about why we got relegated. A selfish side of individuals. Crouch was incredibly selfish not running to the corner and time wasting. But then when it's kicked out we have 3 players behind the ball. That team was an embarrassment.
Yeah, I have, but if someone had mentioned that WGS had written about Crouch, saying he lacked a little bit of grey matter upstairs, I would quite agree. I have never thought Crouch the brightest of footballers. His brains are most definitely in his feet. And to paraphrase my old Dad's words... down there's for dancing, upstairs is for thinking.
Can I assume that was meant as a joke? He had a couple of good seasons with us but was not the greatest really. I've never seen anyone who miss-timed his jumps as regularly. I'm sure he needed contact lenses or something. When he was fired up he was OK but it didn't happen often enough. I don't think he has anything to offer our current strikers. Lambert is a far greater player all round.
