although he only played 5 or 6 minutes on Saturday at Coventry, that showed me he is a good player. He was very composed on the ball, didn't panic and passed the ball well.

only 5 minutes I know, but a nice start. It won't be long before he's playing there regularly.

That's ridiculous. What's wrong with wanting to spell things correctly and use proper grammar? If you have a decent grasp on the English language you may as well use it rather than abusing it. And speaking of abusing the English language, the word "pedant" has been used to death on here.

And yes, I'm well aware of the irony in being pedantic about the word "pedant".

He's really not. I've noticed that a large amount of our youngsters are quite small. Back when I was 15/16/17 myself and most of our team were bigger than these lads. Strength is massive in football, I still feel though that Ward-Prowse is the one that needs the most work, he is very scrawny. With a bit of bulk he could be a terrific player.

It comes with time, hard work and experience. Size is no guarantee of quality.

Edit: Out of interest, were you the scrawny lad who got pushed around by the bigger boys who were "much bigger in my day"?
 
Skill has to come first. I always watch out if a team arrives with a little player because he has had to overcome physical disadvantages and is probably very good. They have a lower centre of gravity and can turn better than the big guys, However, a team can rarely afford more than one of them or they will get outmuscled or beaten for height.

No I really wasn't. I was the county sprinter, and captained the school rugby team for 3 years, football team for 5 years and cricket team for 2 years. I was far from scrawny.

also, the Messi comment, Messi is a tank, he is not small. his strength alows him to hold off players the way he does.
 
See Jack is on the OS looking forward to the Youth Cup game on Wednesday against Bolton. Hope they get something this year..our academy always does well but just falls short. Be nice for them if they win title or the cup this season. Jack also mentions being injured for a few months at beginning of season, so glad he's getting back to fitness. He added that it was great to play in the FA Cup, saying it's great to turn out for any 1st team but playing for Southampton was brilliant. Bless.

Messi is the world's best footballer. And he is DEFINITELY not a tank :emoticon-0102-bigsm 'he is not small.' You're right, he is VERY small. He is 5 foot 6. He is also thin. Definitely not a tank, he just has superior ball control, pace and agility. That can make a footballer, you don't need to be a 6 foot 'tank' or whatever you're implying.

I know what you mean that he's beefed up enough to be strong on the ball, but he's certainly no tank.

He has massively bulked up over the last 2 years. Height has nothing to do with it, core strength is what is important as well as decent upper body strength. Messi has a ridiculously strong core which helps him hold players off, as well as good upper body strength.

Have you seen him? How can you say he has 'ridiculously strong body core' when compared with the likes of Essien, Yaya Toure, and Drogba etc. Besides, you say he's bulked up in the last 2 years, but this is the 3rd year running he's won the ballon d'or, so by your estimations, he was the worlds best player even before he bulked up.
My point is that strength is not necessary to be a world class player, though it is useful obviously, you can be a top class player with just brilliant skill and movement.
