Makes more sense for them not to flag though. If they flag and play stops only for it to have been onside, you can't go back.
I agree but you then come back to var is only supposed to assist not do the job for the onfield officials. If you take away one of the linesman's functions, it then becomes more than an assistant.

Maybe I wasn't clear. If the linesman is told not to flag for offside then that's altering one of his roles. VAR isn't supposed to alter what the officials currently do. It's supposed to be an added assistant.
agreed however they were only told to not flag on close calls (and i assume only re forwards ) due to the discrepancy VAR causes otherwise. VAR will change refs officiating imo as they will feel "their back is covered" re incorrect decisions.

However since i think VAR is **** my view may be a tad skewed :bandit:

Howard Webb wrote a piece a while back saying exactly this. He thinks that makes it a good thing and they can officiate more freely knowing their mistakes can be rectified.

I think part of the problem is having to pick and choose situations in which to use VAR. It should be all or nothing but the game is so complex that all is near on impossible

If it's a success they may keep extending its uses.

You could say goaline technology cost us the league, maybe var will help us to win it. :)

It's ****ing terrible and will completely ruin the game, particularly as a live spectacle.

It will only be used more and more as well.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I have to doff my hat to it after Mane's goal at Porto. Even when it was run again in real time I thought he was off - but he wasn't. And the decisions regarding offside at the WWC were bob-on. Some of the pen decisions are iffy though.
