Is Brendan Rodgers a big enough name to attract the very best?
Perhaps he should use his middle name too. That way his name will be bigger!

Is Brendan Rodgers a big enough name to attract the very best?

I think you're doing Koeman a great disservice there. He a big name is football across Europe, he had a great playing career playing for the big 3 Dutch clubs and Barca and has managed some very big clubs across Europe.Southampton prove you can buy well without a top name.
No he cannot.
He needs to be shrewd in tge market which just happens to be the very thing he is not.

People know who he is, they respect him cause of what he's achieved in the game. Also since he's been around Europe he knows where to look for players and find the ones that match his style.
Soton made a massive improvement when they replace MP with Koeman.
Rodgers on the other hand is a 'Rising' talent (however fans of his past clubs will dispute that) having worked only in England and primarily in the lower leagues, he doesn't know Europe and nobody knows him. I do question whether big named players want to play for him and if the only reason some join is still on the back of the clubs reputation.
Seems Football is moving towards players wanting to play for a manager rather than a club.

But ... big name managers aren't shrewd. They identify their targets and pay whatever it takes to get them. BR's been very good at identifying who he wants but we can't, or more likely won't, pay what is needed to secure them.
Di maria was lvg's first superstar signing of his 25 year career.
Before him robben was his stand out signing.

But he's not especially talented either...he's just average. They're that damn talented?

I have to agree with that, Lovren was targeted last summer Lyon wanted £10m and the committee ruled that was too much for him due to him just having a really **** season.Rodgers wanted players like Williams, Britton, Bertrand, Bony. I don't think it's a case of us not paying what we want for them - it's more of a case that those players are sh*t and he was overruled.
Rodgers got more power in the summer hence why we forked out £50m on his 3 targets from Soton. If the committee kept their power, there is no way they would have been signed.
The best managers are usually at the best clubs, other than the players who are putting the money first [didn't Ramirez choose Southampton over us when we had his mate Suarez and a hope of Euro football and Southampton were jogging along nicely at the bottom], it's usually a combination of manager/CL footie/wanting to play in PL/wages. If you put all the clubs meeting those criteria on offer to a top player, the one thing to swing it would maybe be the manager. Would Moyes have got Di Maria, Falcao or Blind - probably not.

I can also see them turning away from Lallana judging that anything over £15m would be ridiculous and even that price would be the upper limit.
The only one I can see them Oking would be Lambert, due to it being so cheap.
This also seems to be another issue with BR, he sees his target and is unwilling to back down when the price becomes to high. Lovren, Lallana and Markovic were pursued even after the price had gone beyond the upper mark up value.

A lot of players choose the city the club is based in. Like Sigurdsson chose Spurs over us because of London.
'Ayre describes the committee and the process as “a combination of old-school scouting and watching players"
so which one of the blind ****ers watched Markovic then
wonder what stats he had to impress?

If you mean the transfer committee it consists of four people Rodgers, Ayre, Head of analysis and Head of recruitment. I'm not sure those other three have the necessary expertise to overrule Rodgers on who's the best fit for the team but in Ayre we have someone who could baulk at a players value.
''Ayre describes the committee and the process as “a combination of old-school scouting and watching players — and that’s Brendan, his assistants, our scouts — with statistical analysis of players across Europe and the rest of the world.”
“By bringing those two processes together, you get a much more educated view of who you should and shouldn’t be buying.”
“What we believe, and we continue to follow, is you need many people involved in the process.”
As Ayre explained in interview, “He [Rodgers] has a team of people that go out and do an inordinate amount of analysis work to establish who are the best players in a position. It’s a combination of things.
So, Rodgers briefs his team on the positions to fill, the scouting team then provide recommendations and the committee collectively value the player accordingly, in terms of value and also wages.''
