My first ever away game was certainly memorable but it was not all good. It was the infamous 3rd round FA Cup 2-0 defeat at the old Bristol Rovers' Eastville Stadium in 1978.
The coach trip to Bristol was amazing and I was 16 and went with a group of mates from school (no parents!). Stopping at Warminster and a Service Station was mayhem as there was an estimated 10,000 Saints fans who made the 70 mile journey that day.
It was one of the worst conditions I've ever seen at a football match and you had to walk over a sea of mud just to get into the ground.
As you can see from the following videos, the match did not go well and a quite a few of the Saints end decided that it would be a good idea to try and invade the pitch to get the match abandoned!
Needless to say that it was unsuccessful but the experience has left an indelible mark on my memory...

What a first away game to go to
How far were fans behind the goal from the pitch![]()
Yeah, there was a dog track around the pitch as it was also a greyhound stadium.
Done us a few times over the years haven't they? Remember a 3-2 win at St Marys and a certain Rickie Lambert knocking us out the FA Cup in our relegation/admin season I think?
Wasn't the winner scored by an ex academy player, Andy Williams?
I've just checked his Wiki and he wasn't, must be thinking of someone similar. He definitely scored the winner, absolute beaut too. Didn't know he was an ex academy player.
Never done home end for an away game, not sure if I'd want to either. Certainly wouldn't have been able to control myself in that game!
I was there! And I’m ashamed to say I was one of those who ran on the pitch...My first ever away game was certainly memorable but it was not all good. It was the infamous 3rd round FA Cup 2-0 defeat at the old Bristol Rovers' Eastville Stadium in 1978.

So this might bomb or it might be decent so we'll see.
I thought as things are a bit **** at present and most people are a bit down about something with the club/football we could use the international break to forget about it and remember some better times.
So simply post your memories of some good games/moments you've seen over the years and if it's recent a youtube clip too. Let's try stay clear of the too
obvious ones for now as well.
I'll start with the Norwich game in the JPT that we won on penalties, ****ing freezing if I remember correctly and probably no more 12/13k or so in the ground.
Wayne Thomasscored the winning penalty after Papa Waigo equalised (undeservedly iirc) in the last minute.

Has a loan player ever achieved cult status like Papa?![]()
A certain memory of mine was a 2-0 win at home to Bristol City in the season of 07/08.
I know quite a few City fans and had heard so much about how they were going up and we were going down, and was ready to accept another defeat in a pretty abysmal season. We played them off the park and won comfortably.
We also, somehow, didn’t go down, and they lost the play off final thanks to a Dean Windass belter.
Was that the year we lost down at their place midweek? I went to that. Shocker.
I was there! And I’m ashamed to say I was one of those who ran on the pitch...
“We hate Rovers, we hate Rovers,
We hate Rovers, we hate Rovers,
We hate Rovers, we hate Rovers,
We are the Rover haters!”

That was the first and only time!Well I never had you pegged as a Hoolie Chics!...![]()

Just think how my Pompey mates felt....... all of us in the chocolate box down at the dell. I was 15 they were 16-18........Or me down at Fratton in the home end with them........Although in truth there wasn't quite the hostility in those days. Then the dare..........to wear a Saints shirt and scarf in the home end at Fratton....this was in the early 60s in my mad naval days. Pompey were not playing Saints although I forget who they were playing. When the other side scored I revealed my shirt and scarf.........There were a few mainly down the front that got upset....but most around me, although they didn't know I was a Saints fan, just laughed as they had seen me in the stands with my mates for years. My mates and I used to go to each others games since we were small kids. Surprisingly quite a lot of the younger fans did........and yes they came to St Marys God bless them all...they're in the big crowds in the sky now.....but we had some fun.....happy days.
Interesting post that Beddy, although there wasn't the hostility then would you say that that was around when things started changing in that respect and we started becoming the more successful club?
