I always try to think how I would feel. Playing for Sunderland would make me proud as punch, and so happy. Playing for England I think my heart would burst with pride. Imagine representing your country at anything. Must be am amazing feeling and nothing better. International football seems to becoming something that for some disrupts club football. I find that a bit sad, and not for me, country and club equal - but elite international football remains the purest form of competition imo. But I can understand the alternative view.

I’ve always been club over country but that’s not the case for most players

I’ve read some ridiculous things lately, though. People questioning Alderete playing for Paraguay was crazy. Of course he’s going to play, friendly or not <laugh>

Of course he should. And we should be proud to have him do so. He takes a little bit of us with him I always think.

I tend to think a lot of countries without a so called top 5 league probably value their national side more than one with great leagues. Even the championship.

I am planning on heading out to USA for the WC, all being well. Be smashing to meet some fans from all over the globe and them know some of our players.

Like you,I'm always club over country, but I disagree with you about the players. Of course Omar is going to play if he's selected.....he has no choice, the flak of doing otherwise would be massive,as some have found out in the past.
In my view,International football is over-hyped farce. The notion that players can be taken from their regular playing environment and somehow moulded into a completely different one in a couple of weeks is fanciful at best. International sides rarely produce cohesive team football....it's more often than not individual performances which produce any quality. Teams assembled like Brazil of 1970 are very few and far between. The disruption, both potential and real, caused to domestic clubs and their players is massive,as we'll find out, hopefully not to our cost,in January. A properly organised World Club competition every 4 years would be far more relevant and interesting.
