"I agree Eric has played very well for Spurs. We know Eric, we don't know some of these youngsters so we felt these are good matches to find out more about them," Southgate said in his press conference on Tuesday. "Eric is obviously playing in the middle of a three. It's a very specific position he's playing in and the team have been excellent at the end of the season.

"So we may well play with a three, we may well play with a four. We've got cover to do each of those things over the next few weeks but he's definitely in our thinking, but at this moment we can't give everybody time on the pitch that we'd like to and we felt that investment in time in Fikayo, Marc and Ben White in particular, those younger ones, ahead of Eric, for this camp would be more valuable to us."

Also Southgate: picks Coady.

Southgate on omitting Jordan Henderson: "I don't need to know any more about him".

Also Southgate: Picks Harry Kane.

I can only assume he wants to ascertain Kane's ability to solve a Rubik's Cube while blindfolded in a shark-infested tank.

Clown.

Or it could just be that Henderson is only one of many in his position and has had plenty of games to prove himself so additional options are being looked at in case of injury/illness etc.
We don't have quite so many back ups to Kane (which is a very sad state of affairs).

Kane is also captain, which comes with the inevitability of being called up every time you’re fully fit and most of the time when you’re not quite 100%. It’s also not out of the question that he gets the goal scoring record in this set of games, he’s 4 of tying Rooney. So he’s probably raring to go.

I expect Harry will start all 3 games as they are all 'competitive' nations league games and they are all done by 14th June so there is then time for a few weeks rest before pre-season starts. And this year he should arrive back on day 1.

There’s 4 games, all Nations League. Hungary home and away and Germany and Italy away. I expect he’ll start them all, maybe not the final home game depending on how we do in the others. But yes, done by June 14th and a chance to rest up.

England playing two games against a nation run by a populist ****wit who has no idea how to govern but has set in place a structure that means it's 50/50 that a nuclear bomb couldn't shift him from power

Meanwhile, in Hungary...

Surely that's more of a reason to test out the other options?

Tammy Abraham is the only other out-and-out striker in the squad and he's had a very good season.
27 goals in all competitions and he's playing in a final later today.
Calvert-Lewin, Rashford, Watkins and Bamford have all had recent call-ups.
Ivan Toney's the most glaring omission, in my opinion.

Deki and Paskotsi have also been called up, but their respective FAs have really bad social media teams...
Kelleher (23), Bazunu (20) and Travers (23) is a seriously talented young trio in goal.
It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in terms of game time.

The quote from Southgate saying that Dier's position is rather specific in the middle of a three is a bit mad I think. Don't England play that way often? Or is it because slabhead is nailed on for that position regardless of how crap he's playing for ManU? He says he wants to look at the youngsters so (1) what does he need to see from Maguire and (2) surely it's a good thing to see someone else in that position. Or maybe Dier would be better? Why would he not want to see that? That's before considering his previous comments about picking people on form, which he has just about never done.
