Have to say I’m very surprised Dier hasn’t had a call up. Especially given England play in a back 3. He’s younger than Coady and Maguire, barely older than Stones, and has unquestionably been the best English CB in the league this season.
Whilst it’s laughable that Maguire, White and Coady (and even Guehi) got in ahead of Dier, I’m glad he’s excluded. Rather Kane was too. Keep our players as fresh as can be. Let Dier re-charge and come back for another good season and prove this one wasn’t a one-off after a few bad ones.

"I agree Eric has played very well for Spurs. We know Eric, we don't know some of these youngsters so we felt these are good matches to find out more about them," Southgate said in his press conference on Tuesday. "Eric is obviously playing in the middle of a three. It's a very specific position he's playing in and the team have been excellent at the end of the season. "So we may well play with a three, we may well play with a four. We've got cover to do each of those things over the next few weeks but he's definitely in our thinking, but at this moment we can't give everybody time on the pitch that we'd like to and we felt that investment in time in Fikayo, Marc and Ben White in particular, those younger ones, ahead of Eric, for this camp would be more valuable to us." Also Southgate: picks Coady.
That’s what I don’t get. I understand picking youngsters to see them but Dier hasn’t been in camp for ages and it sounds like he’s in the running for a place next season for the WC, so why not take a look at him over inferior players of a similar age? Either way, it’s more rest for a player who will likely be important for us again next season, so I’m not too fussed.
