Paid money for people who use their service is not the same as making money.

It may, more than likely, cost them money if the “decide on the days” don’t bother because they can watch on a stream. Chances are there’ll be more attractive games to choose from.

We often nip through to watch Crewe at the last minute. £40 & any extras we may buy when we’re there. This weekend, if we were to go (& there game hadn’t been postponed) we could choose instead to watch any game for a lot less & Crewe get nowt as a result.10 people can watch a stream, they don't pay individually.

Stockport used to play many of their home games on a Friday night because one of either United or City were always at home on a Saturday afternoon. Playing on a Saturday, at the same time, would cost them money.

The fact that the decision was made without speaking to the clubs beforehand tells you all you need to know.
Did we play Stockport on Friday nights back in the day then?
I was very very late back once after being ‘invited for a look round a Police station’, and I could never understand why it meant I was really late before I had a game for school the next day
Must have been a Friday night then? (Early 80’s)
You might have just cleared up something I have genuinely wondered about, but couldn’t remember

Holt sounds like a bit of a tit there. It's an experiment. If it's a disaster then they'll re-assess.
I don’t think he does myself
It doesn’t sound like an experiment either, it sounds like exploiting a loophole to me, and if they make money without people moaning , or noticing, then I’m sure they’ll do it again
People like Holt moaning will quite rightly cause them to reassess at the very least

Fans will travel irrespective if they want. The fact it is on live doesn't matter to them.
Newcastle filled the away end at Nottingham Forest for a midweek game in a meaningless cup which meant taking time off work and getting back in the early hours of the morning. More of them than were at the KCOM.

Away support by it's nature is more hardcore, and I'd say they reinforce it among each other.

I always wondered why they did it. It wasn’t until I moved over here that it became apparent.

With both Manchester United and Manchester City around 7 miles (11 km) from Edgeley Park, Stockport County has always struggled for local support. During the mid-1960s, the Football League introduced a minimum admission price for all clubs in all four divisions, attempting to help boost revenue for lower clubs. It had the desired effect only in small towns miles from big city teams. It had the opposite effect in places like Stockport, where people had the choice of paying the same price on Saturday afternoon to stand on the terraces and watch Stockport or to watch Manchester City or Manchester United. Stockport devised a solution, moving all their home games to Friday evening kick-offs, which generated larger crowds and extra business in surrounding pubs and restaurants. Still, during the 1998–99season, crowds averaged around 20,000 less than local rivals Manchester City, who were a division below Stockport at the time.[161]

No syd, just no.
Seems pretty obvious they are trying to make the game more accessible to more people. Considering the cries of poverty yesterday I'm surprised at the silver spoon attitude towards that can't afford to go but still support their team. Pretty disheartening to see.

Man city a division below Stockport? Blimey is that right.
I remember man city dropping into the third. Did Stockport scramble up to division 2? Well done if they did.

You simply don’t understand the rationale here. Maybe because you don’t have a EFL football club local to where you live.

Any new fans previously unaware of Accrington Stanley who decide on a whim to watch them today on TV, will be overwhelmed by the number of people who decide today that they won’t go to the ground, but instead watch it on TV. At least, that is the fear that the 3pm tv ban is trying to alleviate. And I think it’s correct.

Stockport County's Edgeley Park was the nearest football league ground to the Mersey.

Back in the 1960's Stockport County were the first to switch to Friday nights to avoid clashes with City, United etc. Were referred to as GoGo County and getting 10,000 crowds and even higher on occasion.

Kevin Francis. Ever heard of him?
No who is he.

The initial entrants into the Stockport County Hall of Fame are: Andy Thorpe, Bobby Murray, Mike Flynn, John Rutter, Jim Gannon, Jack Connor, Alf Lythgoe, Kevin Francis, Frank Newton, Brett Angell, Brendan Elwood, Trevor Porteous, Alan Ogley, Sean Connelly, Jim Fryatt & Bill Atkins (combined), Bill Williams, Jimmy Stevenson, Billy Bocking and Joe Butler

Some uncommitted fans of lower league clubs might stay in on a rainy day to watch a PL game. Don't think fans of Crewe, Gillingham etc will decided not to go because Accrington Stanley or Rochdale are on live.

Be great to go back to the days where you went to a game or caught the goals on highlights only. But of course that won't happen.
Though the fact attendances are at their highest for over 70 years in the top flight with 95% of tickets sold and the second flight has highest attendances for decades and gets more than all but 4 European top flights suggests that the current system works.

Stockport County in the league between 1959 and 1982 so missed those days when they were playing Friday nights.
