Never said we were four nil down. But a four nil defeat at home was a massive shock in those days when we were beating everyone quite easily. Don't know what happened v York either especially as it was only a couple of days before or after a 3-1 home defeat to QPR. I cannot remember City ever being four nil down in the first half like last night, even when we were 5hite under Smith and later Dol*n.

We haven’t been 4-0 down at half time at home before. At least since we started going. Don’t think we have before then either.

I seem to recall a home match around ‘87 against Reading where at half time we were 2-0 down. By the end of the first half City were so bad that the home fans ironically started cheering for Reading, no booing. Seemed to do the trick as the team came back out for the second half and played their socks off bringing it back to 2-2 by the final whistle. Could be my imagination making up that memory though…..

Losing 5-1 at home to Crewe in the Cup was pretty grim.
 
As others have suggested, we were 1-4 down at half time in a Championship home match against Middlesbrough in April 2011.

City were 0-4 down at half time in a Division Two home match against Stoke City in March 1989 - it finished 1-4. Two seasons earlier in November 1986 we were 0-3 down at half time at home against the same opponent - that ended 0-4.

We were 2-4 down at half time when we played Crewe Alexandra at home in Division Three North during January 1932. Other than that, a few 0-3s and 1-3s down the years but nothing else quite as tragic as events last night.

Didn’t remember that Stoke game. Was sure we hadn’t been 4-0 down at half time at home since I started going.

I remember the Newcastle one. I think ChatGPT can only really search dates where the internet was in full swing with match reports.

It’s been a common theme all season though. We allow the opposition so many chances so it’s not surprising that a couple or more end up going in every game. That’s why we have the second worst defence in the league for goals conceded and one of the worst for xG against. Some of it is down to individual errors by defenders but I think a bigger part of it is down to the midfield and the space between the lines, which is more of an overarching issue than Ajayi or whoever dawdling on the ball too much.

Against teams like Oxford and Charlton which don’t have many technical players, we can pin them in their own half more and they don’t have the quality to play through us. Against the likes of Boro, Ipswich, Bristol City and even Blackburn who have a lot or even a couple of quality players in the side, they can play a simple straight pass that cuts through our entire team like piss through snow. Off the ball, the midfield should be organised and disciplined as a second line or block in front of the defence to prevent or discourage those straight passes by the opposition but the midfield don’t do that. The whole midfield tends to be scattered off the ball so there’s so much room for other teams to play through us.

I am so glad that I didn’t come up for the game:
Not because of the performance. **** happens.
Not because of the weather. Derby away was also ****ing chucking it down.
Not because of the traffic. I did the Antwerp ring road twice in three days the week before last.
I’m glad because my mates a gloating **** of a Boro supporter and I would have had to listen to his **** after the game and for 5 hours driving back!
Mind you if the shoe was on the other foot, **** me would I have given him some stick.

Sadly (ha!) I missed the game on TV because of a flight delay due to storms in Greece and the UK, including one flight where the plane was too heavy to take off in the weather and all passengers were offered €250 plus a refund to lure them to cancel (even then the turbo prop plane lurched and fell violently a few seconds after take off). But the highlights looked utterly depressing. The table, however, looks a lot less depressing. We need to bounce back. My own feeling is we’ve gone backwards since Destan started up top. Not sure if the stats back that up.

There was a cup game between reading and arsenal about 15 years ago where arsenal scored 6 goals in the second half to win.

This one. Though they hauled back a 4-0 deficit at half time and won in extra time not the 90 minutes. It was the only example I could find of a team coming back from 4-0 down at half time to win,
