i guess it doesn't give me much confidence that we will beat west ham. however, look at Saints last season, they had a very tough start and then picked up before Xmas

that is a very fair point. but unless we give hughton the chance against the so-called lesser teams, how will we know?

I want to give him the chance, I agree, i'm very much on the fence still

i've probably posted this on the wrong thread, there's a few going at the moment with the same underlying theme!

I'm pretty sure you'll find Tony is very much in the "Hughton out" camp! <ok>

to be honest, even i've had a little peer over the fence to see what's going on! you can't help it, after the week we've just had. but no matter how often i think about it, i still reach the same conclusion - hughton is the right long-term manager for the club. he might not be the best short term manager though, and that could come into play if we lose against west ham. its a tough time but i do feel that he needs more time and more importantly, full support from the fans - otherwise things really could go downhill fast if the atmosphere turns poisonous

Wow what a busy day you lot have had today !
Actually Dave we lost to villa the week before WBA match and secured our prem status by beatings below par WBA side! So the only game we played with a relaxed attitude was at Man city.
I walked back to my car after that match and chatted with some WBA fans, they couldn't believe how bad they'd played that day, stating it was by far there worst performance all season.
So I stand by my comment that both those victories came against teams with nothing to play for , but I won't say on the beach as that's now not allowed!

I would imagine McNally has someone in mind already. I'd much prefer the replacement being in place and ready prior to the axe falling.

It's how it should be done.

Spot on.

I've no doubt it's what McNally has in mind given that he has done it each of the last two occasions.

Who do you think he'll have lined up Carrabuh? I don't think McNally will go for someone out of work, it's not his style!

I'm not too impressed with the names banded about so I'm hoping more for an unknown, as an absolute longshot I'd love Rijkaard, I think he'd be the closest to a star manager we could get get. He's out of work, he's never managed over here, he's not likely to get a top job over here and we have a couple of Dutch youngsters which could be attractive.

And read this from the all knowing (and never wrong) Wikipedia

As a coach, Rijkaard's essential philosophy is to guide his team towards playing attack-minded football as a cohesive unit. In doing this, he believes a team can achieve the dual objectives of winning games and ensuring the audience's enjoyment of the spectacle. This follows in the best coaching traditions of Rijkaard's countrymen and forebears Rinus Michels and Johan Cruijff. In this light, it is notable that Michels coached both Cruijff and Rijkaard during their respective participations with the Dutch national team, and that Cruijff himself went on to coach Rijkaard. Nonetheless, Rijkaard believes in working within a contemporary football context and is not out to imitate the styles and tactics of past masters. In his own words:
“ you gain many impressions from the past. You still have it in your mind when you become a coach, and if something happens you can recall how it was dealt with. But I strongly believe that you cannot copy anyone. The decisions that a great coach made years ago will not necessarily work today.[10] ”
Rijkaard has evidently learned to curb the quick temper of his playing days and is often a portrait of calm and stability in training and along the touchline. He rarely courts controversy in the media and is more apt now to promote a positive environment and let his team's play speak for itself when faced with intense rivalry or criticism.[11] The tactics used during his tenure as manager of Barcelona best exemplify Rijkaard's commitment to playing stylish attacking football. During the team's 2004–05 and 2005–06 campaigns, the coach frequently fielded a 4-3-3 formation, a system which encouraged the creativity of the players in the front third of the field and created optimal interplay between the midfielders and forwards during attacks. Within this system the four defenders also tended to play in a relatively high position on the pitch to support the midfield which frequently advanced to participate in the attack. The team generally focuses on maintaining possession in the opponents' half of the field, applying pressure in order to force the opposition to make errors in defense and offensive counter-attacking. With regards to man-management and motivation, Rijkaard rejects the notion of a "star system" and promotes the idea that every one of his players is a valuable member of the team.[12] He rarely praises one individual over another in the squad, although he has been known to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of a player within the context of a team performance.

I shall be dreaming of this tonight.

However, I'm not sure McNally is as forward thinking or expansive enough to go foreign. Its far more likely to be Pullis than someone like Rijkaard or an up and coming foreign alternative.

wow. i'll have a shot of whatever carrabuh is drinking!! mate, you won't find a norwich fan who disagrees with you about rijkaard. the problem is it won't happen, it just isn't realistic to expect the man who effectively set up guardiola's barcelona tenure up to a tee to come to sleepy norfolk. this does illustrate my point about your expectations though - how will you ever be satisfied supporting norwich? whoever we appoint will be a disappointment compared to the dutch superstar

Rijkaard would be absolutely fantastic, but I just can't see him being interested in us at all, unfortunately...

Also, his record with Barcelona is good, but then I reckon I could quite easily manage Barcelona to a trophy... his efforts with weaker teams leave him a bit open to question.

I'm pretty sure McNally said they considered targets abroad.

I've banged on about him a little, but my ideal target would be Philippe Montanier. Worked wonders in Spain and is doing pretty well in France. Don't think we'd get him until the summer at the earliest, if at all, though.

Well he's presently an advisor on player development at a Prep school in America.

I'm sure even with your own lowly opinion of us, you would agree we'd be a step up from that.

Only if the jobs are available, I don't think he'd get any top job over here for some time.

The point I was making was if he ever had any ambitions to manage over here, we may be more attractive than some would give us credit for.

Don't forget his standing in the game has probably diminished somewhat after failure and sacking in his last two jobs.

If a change is to come, my preference would be someone like Rijkaard, but like Supers, I wonder if he could be tempted to Norfolk. It's a good suggestion though, Carrabuh, and certainly miles better than Pulis!

Great suggestion but I think DM would go for someone with a track record in the PL like Pulis, Rijkaard would be too risky.
