Everyone is trying to make Saints v Brighton into the new rivalry which is not there. And the police are just trying get their own figures up to look good. No doubt they make some stupid arrests for **** all as usual, and then say their operation was a success. BORING!!!!

Awww.....but if she's nice, it would be good to see her get her norks out for the lads surely ??

they should wear tighter shorts too, or better still no shorts! Chances are she will be pretty nice - you need to be of a certain age and have a certain physique to run the line. Plus she'll hopefully understand the offside rule, so it's all good!

by replacing aaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww you fat bastard with
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh get you Ducky, would this help stop offending larger people in the crowd.

If you look at this another way, apparently 6% of the UK population is homosexual, so the chances are there are a few hundred or so Southampton fans at any home game who are gay.

If it's OK to possibly offend those Brighton fans who actually are gay, is it also OK to offend those Southampton fans who are gay?

And before you say "Oh, it's just light-hearted banter", just substitute a "light-hearted" racist remark for the light-hearted homophobic one, or maybe one making fun of disabled people. See how that sounds.

Just a thought...

Started off with a good point. Then went silly with the modern day BS PC nature.

Yes some Saints fans will be gay. Will they be offended at the same chants aimed at Brighton. I doubt it. I am sure they will be joining in with the chant.

As for the swap homophobic for racist. Deary me.

My wife is black, she is also portuguese. She calls her family 'Preto' which is the portuguese equivalent of the Afro Americans calling each other 'Nigga'. Now I am white and I light heartedly call them 'Preto' (Preta for females.) So are you now suggest I am being racist or light hearted? They call me paleface or white. Are they being racist? One of them calls me 'druggie' for being white, elaborating on druggies having pale sking etc. Are they being racist?

Nope this is called light hearted banter and we laugh and chuckle and enjoy each other's comapny without each otherbeing offended by any of it.

I also have some gay friends at my local. I call them Queenie. I will greet them with 'Now then ya great ****'. Do they get upset? Nope. They chuckle and blow a kiss or say 'One day the worm will turn' etc. lol Am I being homophoobic? Nope. Are they being heterophobic? Nope. It is light hearted banter and we all get along like a house on fire.

So what is the problem? We will banter with them and be called homophobic. They will banter with us and be called........What? maybe they will receive bans from the City of Southampton for slandering the city's good name? maybe they will be 'saintist' offending all Saints(non football related) with their words.

So summary? Its all BS. To be taken in the context of the situation and its relative meaning (or more to the point non meaning) and accepted for what it is. This is not individual personal attacks like bananas being thrown at a black player. That is racism. This is a chant directed at a collective in a jovial way based on a sweeping generalisation of a minority attributed to their town.

It is blatently obvious that when using this term it is not homophobia just as calling all Swiss nationals 'cheese producers' or all Dutch nationals as 'clog wearers'. I dare say the UK PC brigade would come down on that kind of chanting too. I bet the Swiss and Dutch would be amused themselves at how this country can make a mountain out 1% of a molehill!!!!

End of rant and I shall still sing 'we smell fish' at every Lincoln vGrimsby game without wondering if any of them actually work anywhere near a fish market or on a fishing boat or even like fish at all. No I am not 'fishist'.

It's different if you know them, and they know you are joking. It's about the intent behind the words, not the words themselves. You might think it's "light-hearted banter" and you might mean no offense by it, and maybe if anyone does take offense, they are overreacting a little, and to be honest if you're offended that someone has suggested you're gay, then that probably makes you a bit homophobic yourself. However, I think it's best no avoid this "homophobic chanting" for three reasons:

1. To suggest that homosexuality is a laughing matter can cause offense.
2. To suggest that being gay is in some way inferior can rightly cause offense. (And don't tell me people don't hold this opinion, because they do).
3. It's not funny anyway.

I don't like it when people have a go at political correctness or the "PC brigade" because, although it can go a bit overboard sometimes, the world is a much better place with it. And with regards to the comment about people who work in the fishing industry, they choose to do so, and they can change that decision at any time. You don't choose your race or sexual orientation.

so lets get rid of the following chants:

'she fell over'. chanted when a male dives or goes to ground easily implying that he is in fact a female or 'cissy'
'Who ate all the pies' Implying that a player who may have a few more pounds than he possibly could get down to is fat.
'The referees a ******' implying the referee pleasures himself.
'Sheep, sheep sheep shaggers'

There are many more. Should they all be binned? Lets all ban the 'scummers' and Stains and skates statements. Lets stop all comedians suggesting that scousers steal things. Lets ban the Simpsons because it plays on stereotypes and many people are unable to see that by laughing at the simpsons they are actually laughing at theirselves. Lets ban Only fools and horses, accepted as classic british comedy (and is) which could be taken as very racist and offensive!!!

Lets just get realistic with the PC bit and I'm sure the Brighton fans will give out just as much 'banter' as we give them without it leaving a scar upon their memories.

This is like using swear words as a descriptive or using it aggressively. same word, different tone of use however the person aimed at knows that you are using it as a descriptive word or an aggressive word.

I actually don't think it would be a bad idea scrapping those ones for the sake of children who attend the games. I think you're being very over-dramatic and rather immature about this PC thing. It's mainly just homophobia, racism and, to a lesser extent, sexism which shouldn't be tolerated.

Well i will be giving the Brighton fans grief all match, as if the old bill go wading in to try and eject people,it will kick off big style. Lets face it,most of it is only good natured banter.
We know a majority of the Brighton fans arent gay,but if it winds them up,and gets them going a bit, then it will only make the atmosphere more enjoyable.
I have no problems with homosexuality at all, as my collection of girl on girl dvd's proves.
