Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted it will be strange to face his former club Sunderland on the opening day of the Premier League season, but that he is looking forward to the challenge of playing for the Anfield club.

Henderson was bought for around £16 million by Liverpool, and he is hopeful that Sunderland’s subsequent spending spree will mean he avoids being booed by the Black Cats fans.

He told The Independent: "I've got good friends there still.

"I'm looking forward to the game and hopefully it's a good day for Liverpool.

“It might be a bit strange but I've got a job to do for Liverpool now."

Henderson also spoke of his excitement at working with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, and believes that it is up to him to keep improving as a footballer and learning from those around him.

He added: "He [Gerrard] has been one of the best players in the world for many years.

“It will be great to train and play alongside him.

“I don't model myself on him or anyone.

“I try and do my own thing on the pitch and will look to keep going in the right direction.

"I've got to do what I did at Sunderland which brought me here – to keep improving and working hard.”

Henderson is also hopeful of avoiding any abuse from the Sunderland fans, particularly after being such a good servant to the club and in view of the signings the club were able to make because of his large transfer fee.

He added: "I had a great time there and the fans were brilliant with me.

“I don't see any reason why that would change."

**** i hope no-one boo's him, bunch of twats who would.

why would any one boo him he was a good servant for us and you cant knock for his move <bubbly>

I would never boo the lad.

If i had a car worth £500 and someone gave me £30,000 for it, i'd smile every time i saw it.

I wish him all the best at Liverpool, and hope he goes on to be the player they have paid for.

Agree with all of the above. He was a good servant to the club, it's a step up (got to admit it, like it or not) and we got massive money for him, so <ok> Hendo

I would be gutted if any fan booed the lad. He has been nothing but good news for the club since he was a kid. Worked his arse off to get to the first team, did well and broke into the England team and then brought £16m up front (rising to £20m) into our coffers to assist the purchases of Gardener, Vaughan, Larsson, O Shea and Brown.

He should and will be given a rousing welcome from the Sunderland fans next Saturday and on any occasion he returns to the SOL in the future. Anyone booing should be shot down by one and all.

Have a great season Jordan but a **** 90 mins next week kidda. Lol

I hope he does well for Liverpool

also he can let his 5 year contract run down then come back home for free

I totally agree with your comment Bruce, but should he play on Saturday I hope he has a mare against us.:emoticon-0100-smile

I wish him well, but of course we hope he performs poorly on saturday. I am though having a fiver on him to score .Ex players tend to haunt us and when the fixtures threw this one in as first game - well it just seems bound to happen !

I wont boo the lad as i was happy to see him go. I know a few will disagree with me but i never really rated the lad and i think the money we got for him was frankly daylight rohbbery

SSN are normally spot on with their values of player transfers and they have Henderson at £20m - they also have Whickham at £8.1m - the UP FRONT fee (among others) and they have been spot on - we got £16m for Bent rising to £24m depending on clauses...

Other tabloids and press appear to say that the fee was around £16m. I believe it was £20m up front according to SSN and their sources are normally spot on.

I certainly would hope that we don't boo him - but also that we don't applaud him at the strat and make him more confident - don't annoy him but certainly don't give him a bit of positive mental attitude to go into the game.
