Happy New Year to Sunderland fans all around the world! My middle son sent me a text at midnight tonight saying happy new year etc and how proud he was to be a Sunderland fan. I thought “ I’ve done my job”

Last night my lad (23 years old) and Mrs K (55 years old) and me were sat outside enjoying a beer. He was born in Northampton where I worked for a few years and Mrs K was born in Corbridge but spent most of her life in the midlands and the south of England. Neither have lived in Sunderland or had any link to the city other than me.
Anyway, he asked “why do we support Sunderland mum?” Mrs K replied “because your dad does”. I thought exactly the same. My work here is done. We really are a special club.
