Sunderland
Napoli manager Rafael Benitez could be set to switch his focus from Liverpool’s Pepe Reina to Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone, CaughtOffside understands.

The Italian giants are in the hunt for a new signing between the sticks this summer after taking Reds shot-stopper Reina on loan for the 2013/14 season, though recent reports suggest that the club will not be taking up the option to sign the 31-year-old permanently, as he is too expensive.

Reina looks unlikely to become first choice for Liverpool again after the Merseyside giants signed Simon Mignolet last summer, but he could still have an offer from Barcelona this summer as they eye a new backup keeper.

Napoli, meanwhile, remain keen on bringing someone in and will now look to former Arsenal ace Mannone as their number one target in that position, after the Italian impressed in his first season with the Black Cats this term.

The 26-year-old had largely been a backup player during his time at the Emirates Stadium, but made the decision to quit the club in order to play regular first-team football, and he has certainly grabbed the opportunity with both hands at the Stadium of Light.

Mannone played a key role in Sunderland’s successful fight against relegation, and also shone in the Capital One Cup as Gus Poyet’s side reached the final of the competition by beating Manchester United over two legs in the semi-finals.

Inter Milan have also looked at signing the player in recent months as they also consider making a new signing in goal, but Napoli now appear to be his main suitors this summer.

Sunderland will be understandably keen not to let such an important player leave this summer as they hope to improve for next season, but their struggles in the Premier League could mean a number of their stars will be keen to move on.

Winger Adam Johnson already looks like making an exit as he looks set to join Everton on loan, while Mannone will no doubt be tempted by the prospect of playing Champions League football at the Stadio San Paolo next year after Benitez guided the club to third place in Serie A.

In a further blow to Sunderland, it could be that Mannone’s previous club Arsenal will receive a decent chunk of any transfer fee that the Naples outfit pay to sign the shot-stopper.

Personally think we got out of jail with vito after selling the mig, better keeper if you ask me, no way should we consider selling him unless it is for stupid money and i mean stupid

AJ rumours of him going on loan really have me worried about shorts ambitions for the club if Everton want AJ make them pay.
We may have lost Colback due to not giving him a decent contract offer last summer.
we are making bids for a player who by all accounts does not want to come (a.williams)
Come on short get it sorted

£15 million minimum.

I don't think we have to worry, Vito likes England, and seems to love the club. He's a Milan fan so if that chance comes then fair one.

As I remember it we signed manone on a 2 year deal

So we need to get him signed up on a longer deal or sell him

We are not in a strong position here

Commenced negotiations with both Connor & Vito last week about contract extensions.

HAMBURG star Rene Adler and Manchester City’s Costel Pantilimon are the latest keepers to be linked with Sunderland.

But both look long shots to be playing at the Stadium of Light next season, with question marks hanging over Adler’s fitness while Pantilimon, out of contract at the Etihad this summer, would almost certainly look for wages that would be out of Sunderland’s reach.

The 6ft 8in Romanian – who was in goal when Sunderland and Manchester City met in the Capital One Cup final in March – might still be offered new terms by City.

But while his future is unresolved he is going to be linked with a host of clubs.

The link with Adler, meanwhile, comes through Sunderland’s new director of football Lee Congerton, who was previously employed by the Bundesliga outfit

German keeper Adler is rated between the £2-3million bracket by Hamburg, who escaped the drop out of the Bundesliga in an end-of-season play-off, and Sunderland do need to strengthen between the posts with both Keiren Westwood and Oscar Ustari leaving the club this summer.

There are questions to be answered, though, over Adler’s fitness with him having suffered a knee ligament injury in his final game last season.

First-choice Vito Mannone has a year left on his Sunderland contract, while England Under-19 keeper Jordan Pickford is currently second in line for the Black Cats.

The 2nd off last paragraph is just as much a concern.
Why on earth would we loan AJ to Everton ?

I saw a statement from the club (can;t find it though) that Johnson would not be loaned out to anyone. I'm also sure it was one of those "every player has his price" type statements but it showed a bit of intent on keeping hold of him unless silly money comes in.

Also - the most worrying thing for me is the fact that Vito only has a year left - I admit I had doubts about him when we signed him but this humble pie tastes very sweet. Need to tie him down to a 4 or 5 year deal - not only does that give stability but it increases his value massively.

Pantilimon coming in on a four year deal...

SAFC sporting director Lee Congerton said: “Competition for places is healthy and brings out the best in players. We already have a great goalkeeper in Vito Manonne and another one now in Costel." Suggests that Mannone will be staying

Hope he stays
