Agree that it does seem most keepers are almost scared to come and command the area/catch crosses etc incase they fumble it and it leads to a chance/goal - which will then be highlighted on MoTD or whatever other programme/media source and they'll be castigated for it.

As I remember, catching the ball was always an integral part of being a goal keeper. How times change.
Thats what differentiates the average goalies from the good ones. Almost any goalie can be a shot stopper, the good ones calmly catch every cross in reach.

How many times did Kenny do that last season? He just stayed on his line no matter what, even if the ball was 3 yards away from him like Dzekos header.
