you're probably right Fran, but even though MLT was the best, I was brought up with Steve Williams as the boss of the midfield and I can't bring myself to say anyone other than him
Oh do try, FLT. Go on, sit there and have a little rehearsal. MLT was the best midfielder <- there's your line. SteveW can be a close second. Then come back on here and be loud and proud about it. If I can do it, you can.
Just reading all these posts reminds me of just how lucky we have been to have seen so many really great players and for me the greatest man to have ever pulled on a Saints shirt will always be the one and only, the truly marvelous, highly talented, unplayable, breath takingly brilliant Mr Ron Davies. This man just took your breath away.
Steve Williams, Bally, Jimmy Case, Le Tiss all top class.......my favourite from when I was a nipper first watching Saints.....Brian O'Neil.....hard as nails but also a good player, socks round his ankles, no shin pads, they were for wusses.
Jimmy Case for me this man was feared and though i dont advocate rough house stuff i do when its mixed in with talent skill vision and a shot like a cannonball this bloke had been there seen it done it and has the tee shirt and though the question is relevent to saints his acheivments with the all conquering Liverpool can probably not be matched by some of the other names mentioned though i also had the same regard for Bally for pretty much the same reasons
I'm with you there Godders. Sir Matt Busby said he was the best centre forward in Europe, and he knew a thing or two about football. Having said that, this is a thread about midfielders, and great as Steve Williams and our two World Cup Medal-winning midfielders Terry Paine and Alan Ball were, that accolade has to go to Le Tiss.
Has to be Tiss. Could put a ball on a two pence piece from 50 yards when he was in the mood, and I very, very, very seldom (as in count them on one hand) saw him balloon shots. His accuracy was breathtaking.
Le Tissier was a midfielder. In no way was he a striker. He wins hands down. My mind is blown that anyones believes he was a striker
mlt will never be another. But my favourite complete midfielder is is jimmy case, remember him coming on at half time (coming back from suspension) and we're 0-2 down to man u. First thing he does is beak norman 'im a hardman' whiteside's nose, then he kicked bryon robson off the pitch- we drew 2-2 with robson and whiteside too scared to go near him. he had the touch of leonardo and the bite of a lion
