It hasn't worked. He then starts consecutive games under Arteta, doesn't take a paycut and then isn't selected anymore.
Surely, that's the club's decision taking precedence rather than his?
I'd obviously prefer it if he's off the books because it's costing us more than he's worth and the entire saga has been dull. But if it's clear he's not going anywhere, and wants to see out his final year, we may as well try to make use of him. He's said several times he wants to play and is available to play. If that is the case, it's not clear if he has given up.

Players or ex-players in good standing are free to chat **** about the opposition and they'll be lauded for it.
People sitting on their arses whining about the club or people that have left after acting like ****s shouldn't be afforded that privilege.

If Arteta is even contemplating starting him, he can't be that disinterested in football for now.
This is why I'm saying that your perception of Ozil and the way he's perceived by sections of our fanbase aren't the same. They don't see him as someone who was sitting on their arse not bothering. He contributed a lot for his first 4 years. He was poor in Wenger's final year (17/18). Emery tried to freeze him out midway through 18/19, but it didn't work and ended up playing more towards the end. Then was frozen out again this season up until Emery got sacked. Arteta began to play him more, then lockdown happened, and he's not featured since (although that may change).
There's a divided view on him, so even though there are those who think he's a waste of space not trying hard enough, others will say he's been let down by the club and has mitigating circumstances. So a sizeable group of people will feel he's done enough to warrant chatting **** about Spurs (particularly given his first few years at the club).

Arteta gave everyone a clean sheet this season, by all accounts. Guendouzi was the main example, IIRC.

Well, I'm thinking perhaps he's trying to flaunt Guendouzi in the shop window and isolating him from the core squad hasn't helped because it reaffirmed people's beliefs of him having attitude/discipline issues. Which made it harder to flog him off. Ozil is a little different in that respect. Honestly, if Ozil didn't seem committed, I'm positive Arteta wouldn't consider playing him. He's declined, but I don't think that's due to lack of effort. He covered the most distance in our win against Man United on NYD, for example. His decline is more due to the classical #10 role becoming obsolete, as he doesn't possess the physical qualities required for the modern game.

De Bruyne plays the same role and has similar physical qualities. He won Player of the Year, scored 13 goals and got 20 assists.
As the team has declined the fans are almost entirely focused on Spurs.

De Bruyne is stronger, retains possession better, can accelerate faster and defends from the front. Ozil isn't really, and hasn't been, this type of player ever. In a time where the Prem demands more athleticism, speed and physical prowess, I don't think Ozil and de Bruyne overlap at all.

Yeah I agree, but the prominence of football banter on social media has also risen drastically. Loads of these anonymous fan accounts can tweet the most illogical, inaccurate piece of information, and it'll get thousands of retweets and likes, if it ridicules a rival club. Doesn't matter if it's true or not. It's not just unique to Arsenal fans, it's with most of the fanbases of the big clubs.
De Bruyne's better and more willing to make tackles. They play exactly the same role, though.
Ozil covers plenty of ground, so it's nothing to do with stamina or athleticism.
He just won't get stuck in or put himself about. He doesn't care and won't do it. It's not physical or his position.
That article suggests that De Bruyne's not playing that position any more, which just isn't true.
Fernandes for Utd and Maddison for Leicester are other obvious examples for success last season and that's just the top 4.
Liverpool are the exception from those sides.
This is largely true, but the rise of AFTV has seen a lot more of it from Arsenal fans than those of other clubs, in my opinion.
