Newcastle United are set to sign former Sunderland midfielder Ki Sung-yueng.Ki, a free agent after leaving relegated Swansea City, is understood to have discussed personal terms undergone a medical at the club.

If the proposed move is completed, Ki will become the club's second summer signing after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle.

Ki – who had a season on loan at Sunderland earlier in his career – went to the World Cup with South Korea and was linked with a move to Everton.

The 29-year-old joined Swansea from Celtic in 2012.

The move for Ki comes as United wait for Real Sociedad to activate Mikel Merino's release clause.

Always liked Ki, not a bad player. Not great either and I imagine they'll be hoping he's not signed for the first team as he barely got a game for Swansea who were ****e.

Good signing for them I think.

Certainly better than what they have right now in his role imo.

Smashing player mate. Hot and cold admittedly but lovely ability, absolutely improves them for me.

They ain’t rivals 2 divisions above us so why have sour chops about it. As I said he’s a smashing player.

Think you're overstating how good he is a tad, nice player to watch when he's on form but not the most effective. Same opinion I've had of him since he played for us.

He can see a pass mate, as I said hit and cold but undoubted ability.

I’m not suggesting he’s Modric fella!

I debated whether to make a thread on here asking for opinion, figured I'd probably get a decent response but also that it could attract others over and a slanging fest. I first saw him play properly when he was at Sunderland and thought he looked a really tidy player, nothing spectacular but moved the ball well and had a decent engine and technique. Lightweight though and sometimes drifted through games.

Depends on who he's in for to be honest. Compared to Hayden/Colback it's a big upgrade, compared to Merino (who I suspect in a year or two will be a very good player but may not get to develop with us) it's a sideways step. I'm happy with him, not least as I think he engenders a more attractive style of football and three in central midfield. I'll start by saying I doubt he's been signed as a first XI player (Shelvey and Diame were awesome for us in the last 3-4 months) and then concede that he'll probably end up playing 20+ games for us next year.

I don't think he's kicked on in the way I'd have hoped a few years back, just sort of plodded along but...

he is captain of a tidy and effective South Korean side and the more captain-types we have the better.

He should be solid mid-table, not sure why he fell out of favour with Swansea but they weren't exactly well managed at times last year.

I'm dubious about players who are up and down every season, you can't rely on them. Same reason I don't rate Ozil despite the obvious talent.

I don't begrudge the mags signing him at all, with all the distance between the clubs and things looking rosy for us I think I'm at a lifetime high in terms of not caring about them/borderline wishing them well.

He's a tidy enough signing but if that's the budget they're looking at then we all know how that can turn out in the premier league. If there are spends coming and he's just a sensible bit of business for free they'll be ok.

Great player on his day but we only had him for a year. He tends to be a nightmare of a character which we got through unscathed. Rafa still proving ex Sunderland players can get in their team. He's made Taylor look a right mug.

Always seem to remember him for that header he ducked out of
