You’d need a Morocco defender to stab someone with a zombie knife for this ref to give a penalty. Not a chance he’s giving that.

I don’t think you’re stupid but I’ll ask the question anyway. When do you think maintenance should be carried out on rail infrastructure. Maybe nights and weekends as to try not to disrupt the service when needed through the week?Preferable to no trains at all. ****ing rail replacement bus in 2026.

Night work is a huge part of Network rails maintenance strategy, but unfortunately the time between the last service in the evening and first in the morning can be as short as 4 to 5 hours. Replacing sections of track, upgrading or replacing signals and other safety devices will likely not be achievable in such a short timeframe, so they have to choose a time when passengers are least affected.Nights. On this line specifically they made a big song and dance during Covid about how they were using the opportunity to do works that would eliminate the need to do virtually any for years to come. But in 2026 in a serious country I think we should be at a point where there are sufficient tracks that can be operated to work around works, unforeseen circumstances etc. given we put a man on the moon nearly 60 years ago.
Similar with the roads. Why do you drive by a small section of the M1 saying it’ll take 18 months to upgrade? Speed limit reduced to a crawl because of workers in the road when there aren’t any. We just accept that’s fine.

Creating redundancy in all of our infrastructure is a great idea. Let’s have thousands of miles of tracks and roads, at taxpayers expense, just so every once in a while you aren’t inconvenienced![]()
I’ve spent my whole career in engineering managing capital projects, across the EMEA region, and answering the same questions as to why we can’t do faster, cheaper and without disruption. The solution from people like yourself is always easy until challenged. Are you the MD of ****ing Thameslink or something? Why is it this deep?
It wouldn’t be redundant but it would enable a service of some level continuously. Similarly it’s mental how early trains finish and how late many start in the day. We just accept **** that shouldn’t be nowadays and pay an obscene amount for the privilege which isn’t limited to travel.
But they take you places you never wanted to visit.Preferable to no trains at all. ****ing rail replacement bus in 2026.

Do you not think that the train companies would not like save money on maintenance and run more services?
You’ve, not for the first time, have called out train service disruptions without a thought to why there might be train service disruptions!
But they take you places you never wanted to visit.
At least HS2 is a hit
All the time we have an underinvested and aging infrastructure, there will be disruptions. My own view is that where possible we should complete the necessary maintenance once and right. As long as any disruption is properly managed and resourced, taking into consideration your comment around miles of roadworks without any sign of work, then we have to accept what is generally minor inconvenience.I think they’d like to do whatever has the best ROI, will do whatever minimum maintenance they have to for the cheapest possible cost and largely couldn’t give a **** about running more services. They’re almost all ****e, poor value and couldn’t give the slightest **** about their consumers who have little alternative when they do use them and can get ****ed when they aren’t running.
