They used to have three up to when the CL started.
The European Cup (Champions and current holders)
The UEFA Cup (2nd, 3rd, 4th and league cup winners)
The Cup Winners Cup (for FA cup winners).
Think this was a way to keep smaller countries on side with UEFA as they got ****ed with the EL and CL having a league structure.

Well it's all relative still imo.
