Off Topic General Election

I wonder if Harry Potter had an element of political satire in it. Surely Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw must represent the main parties - not sure about Gryffindor though. :) (I also wonder whether posters on here would agree which party was which - I have my idea)

I've never read any of the Harry Potter books so haven't a scooby what those names represent - but, going by images they conjure up for me, I'd say Slytherin = Tory, Hufflepuff = Labour, Ravenclaw = UKIP and Gryffindor = Plaid Cymru. :)

I am afraid that I cannot help as I have never read the books or seen the films. I am sure that others will have though.

My brother in law suffers from dyslexia and had never managed to read an entire book until at the age of 70 when he picked up one of the grandchildren's Harry Potter books. Since then his reading and writing of e-mails has come on in leaps and bounds.
My son at the age of around ten could read but never picked up a book if he could help it - until the Harry Potter books. He devoured them and then went on to find books really enjoyable - so whatever the literary merits of the books they do inspire some to read.

yes but regardless of that the electorate will vote for and engineer change almost in spite of the parties.

Look how Trump got in.

and how the 'will of the people' (<doh>) was for Brexit even though the country will be poorer for probably 10-20 years and there will be little sign of any gains for anyone....

There is less chance of a new UK political party taking us to utopia than WFC signing Bale, Ronaldo, Messi and Suarez on frees. Put it another way there is more chance of me being invited to the annual whinge athon in the Red Lion held by the Watford not606 remoaners and Marxist group!! :emoticon-0100-smile

I wouldn't want Ronaldo, Messi or Suarez at Watford. I appreciate your attempts at humour however. You will find that most of us here are against Brexit - but Marxist ?

I'll be in the Red Lion tonight before the game, I'll look for the seat with the ejector fitted. :emoticon-0100-smile

They certainly do inspire children to read - all of mine have read the entire series. I still do, however, have reservations about using them in a school setting - reservations that some other teachers don't seem to share. I've reached exasperation point with more than a few parents who have complained that the reading materials I use in class are 'too young' for their little darlings as 'at home he/she reads Harry Potter perfectly'. They simply don't seem to realise that there is a difference between reading and comprehending...

More likely to be a coalition of different groupings/parties....

Not a chance there would be enough defectors to make any difference. Nigh on impossible for new party to make a breakthrough. If UKIP, who won the European elections and gained 4 million votes in the last election, can only muster 1 MP.

You can certainly have Anna Soubry, please, please take her!!!!

I agree. The Potter books are like entry level books for reading enjoyment - my son went on next to Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy and then kept finding more things to enjoy.

Another horrendous car crash interview by Diane Abbott. The incompetence in the shadow cabinet is clearly not limited to Corbyn.
