Yeah Rooch, it was announced yesterday as part of an initial spending review. The winter fuel payment will only be paid to those on pension credit and other means tested benefits

Thought RR was excellent. Furious tone and rightly so. What the Tories have done to this country is ridiculous and it's right to set out the costs and ridiculous overspend. We all knew it was coming but nice to see it layed out in parliament and backed by the OBR.

The estimated cost to the public for this pay rise is £1bn. The estimated cost of the strikes and cancellation of operations in the NHS over the last 18 months is £3bn.
So we've saved money, looked after the health of the people and invested in our future doctors.

I take it you’re on about the government trying to save £4bn by only giving benefits to the people who actually need them.
The estimated cost hasn’t actually been disclosed yet has it? Some are saying £1bn and some closer to £2bn, a year. That’s a poor take to be honest, give in to mercenaries every time they strike because it’s the easy option.
Reeves has came out and blatantly lied about a black hole so she’s got an excuse to raise taxes. Half of that money was apparently just budget for civil servant pay rises, which she’s now committing to? So how is that a “surprise”? What was she saying a few weeks ago about not needing to win an election to know the state of public spending? What happened to that? The IFS have already stated labour knew what the finances looked like. It’s no surprise the OBS are backing them when most of them are labour and they’re being given more power, by labour.
Oldest trick in the book, blame the outgoing employees for the situation being much worse than they initially thought so you have free rein to “improve” and now you’ve got the left absolutely lapping it up.
Everything, ultimately, boils down to supply and demand ...

If we have to pay them more to keep them that's too bad, the alternative is worse imo.
Winter fuel allowance was introduced by Labour in 1997 and since then there's been a constant flow of uneven budgets. It's nothing new. Was it the TV licence for over 75 yo that went recently or means tested ? Now the fuel allowance to be means tested. This could backfire as millions of pensioners don't claim all their benefits. Report suggested 1 in 3 don't claim properly or aren't aware of entitlements. What do they do ? Will the government investigate those cases. ? Government needs to be more radical in it's approach as the total spend is £1.2 trillion . There's no doubt billions could be saved out of that lot. There's waste everywhere even in our own homes there's waste. They generally take the easy route. % cuts across the board . Politicians mustn't upset the voters but millions of Labour voters might be concerned about yesterdays news. ?

Very disappointed to see the govt cancel the cap on social care cost. This is an area of our society that needs help. It is reported to generate a saving of £1bn by scrapping it. Not sure that is at all worth it.
I have to say I am disappointed, but not surprised, by this so called black hole stuff. It is spin in my opinion. The same spin every time a new party comes to power. The last lot were even worse than we thought. Etc etc. Labour were told, in no uncertain terms, their manifesto was not affordable and uncosted. All other parties the same. They ignored it and campaigned regardless. Now there is a handy headline to hide behind and do stuff they said they wouldnt. I just wish politicians wouldnt take us for fools. This country needs more money, just tax us who can pay a bit more for crying out loud and do it now. Dont hide behind spin, just do the right thing and do it with a bit more respect for our intelligence.

No, they should be going to the table and negotiating. Having the brass neck to stand in parliament and claim you’ve done more in 3 weeks because you’ve just bent over to their demands straight away is unbelievable.
Why are public sector workers getting a pay rise that’s 2.5x that of inflation? It makes no sense other than a quick fix to bribe voters without thinking of the consequences

They have negotiated. The demands were 35%. 22% over 2 years is the agreed figure and also factors in a back pay for under inflation pay rises in the last couple of years.
No point in discussing this further for me, I feel like you've decided on your anti-Labour stance and that's the lens you'll see every decision through.
Have they ****e. 35% was never attainable they’ve just gone for the first thing the reps have thrown at them, that’s why it’s wrapped up already. But likewise, pointless convo with voters up here who’ll always vote labour no matter what.
