What would people think of what’s happened in France ? A coalition of liberal parties to keep out the fascists. I personally think an alliance of labour, Lib Dem’s and Greens would be great going forward if there’s a threat from the elite but not sure they would make it happen https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ck7gydwgvy8t
I've changed my mind, I want to vote for this bloke https://www.facebook.com/share/r/Kp4pQM9m3kPQ2v8g/
There's something strange going on in Europe and I haven't gotten my head round it yet. Last year France and Greece both announced they want fewer tourists, people protested that feeling on the streets. Spain have said they want to restrict mass tourism and, in Barcelona, thousands have protested in the streets. Much of this is directed at Brits and it seems were becoming less welcome than we were. It must be worrying for people with property there, especially those with holiday homes but especially rentals. Is this partly due to Brexit or is everyone just becoming more xenophobic ... ... will it change your holiday plans?
It's not just a continental Europe issue, we've got the same problems here but we're just not as vocal. It's not the nationality of tourists it's all to do with the impact mass tourism can have on a local economy. Just look at Cornwall for instance, one of the most economically deprived parts of the country yet house prices and rents are through the roof. We need a massive rethink when it comes to the private rent sector, yes the likes of Airbnb have a lot to answer for but it's much wider than that. Too many renters are paying the mortgage on the house they live in for greedy landlords.
The Balearics were fighting each other not so long ago. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1915086/balearic-islands-majorca-tourism-row/amp
I think it might be something more specific to Barcelona, which is a hotbed for misfit politics, I'm sure there are places where people are peeved by tourism, even the town I live in gets annoying during summer weekends, but Barcelona is one of those places, perhaps like Liverpool, where due to its sense of identity it has a specific feeling and politics running through it.
I think the economic system is making lives harder. Add Covid onto that and it tips. People need secure homes and the wealthy are hoovering them up and letting them at high cost in turn pushing young people into longer stays with family or away. We simply have to redirect some of that to give people hope. It’s not the tourists fault but if you can’t have a good standard of living and others do it causes difficulty. As always it’s blamed on the outsider you see not the sharp dressed insider who you don’t. Watch this
You're quite right, there has to be a massive change in property ownership. Lindisfarne, or Holy Island if you prefer, has so many holiday homes the spirit has gone ... ... communities are destroyed when so many houses are left empty. No idea how things can ever change tbh.
Same thing happened in Ellie, near you Smug. Locals find it too expensive to live there now, with the amount of holiday homes
Funny you should say that mate, this was mentioned by my boss the other day. He has a lovely big house on the hillside of Wester Newburn that looks down on Elie. He was saying they looked at places there, before they bought here, but the people were too snobby and lots had places that were were holiday homes or rentals. He probably has more money than most of them but he's a self made man frae Glesga We often eat at the Ship Inn, because the food is good, but we're certainly not part of the 'in crowd'.
Holiday homes is about wealth spending on assets that would traditionally be the assets of workers. Now workers rent the assets and that creates more wealth and that cycle repeats. That’s why I’m always saying minor change is good but not enough.
