This does my head in. We had roofing problems for 7 years stemming from an initial storm damage. Gable end filled with sand, redone with mortar that fell out in large chunks. A leak that was remedied with a new roof section that still leaked in the same place.
Now bare in mind I do a lot of research before hiring anyone. These people came from "Which Trusted Trader" and "Checkatrade", all with loads of impeccable reviews and superb ratings. One trader told me fairly recently that if you don't like a (negative) review, you just pay Checkatrade to remove it
So it's totally pointless in reality, you still have no idea what you're going to get. Same experience with plumbers I've had.One thing I've learnt - avoid any company that has "... and sons" or "family business" in their name. They've just taught them to be as dishonest as themselves. What you want is a proper company with a corporate structure and genuine comeback. Also, always get written quotes and written guarantees of work. And don't have any hesitation in chasing them up with Trading Standards, it worked for me.

Yeah, the problem with many of these self employed 'tradespeople' is that they are their own boss, and as such have nobody to answer to. When they don't turn up on time, leave early, take a week to give you a quote etc there's nobody there to do anything about it. I try to do as much of the work as possible myself to avoid being ripped off. I would have done the garage roof myself but my strength is not anywhere good enough yet to be throwing OSB sheets up in the air - hence I had to suck it up and roll the dice.
I wish I had known.

One is top class at flat roofing.

They do not advertise as work is by word of mouth.

There are to many clowns that did a 2 week course and watch you tube videos then decide to buy a van and let loose on the public as a tradesman !
Usually no clue of all aspects of the job and so they sub it out making the price higher, or botching it themselves sometimes with damaging or even dangerous results.
I've gone in quite a few times over the years to put thier shoddy work right. Costing the customer who usually goes with the cheapest price in the beginning and not doing any research on the Muppet they let loose on thier property a lot more than the original cost.
A lack of proper apprenticeships for all trades and linked business training, for decades has created a gap for more cowboys who's main skill is lying and excuses !
Checkatrade fmb etc are a con making money out of trades that think it will give punters confidence seeing a logo on the van ! if trades are really bad then they may get crossed off as members but no real punishment . Most only join if it's part of being allowed to carry out grant work etc which is no longer the case so shows how useless they are !
Some of the best trade guys I know are from family businesses as they were taught from early on and been around the game a long time, most find it's much easier to do a job right in the first place than the false economy of skimping ! Good trades hate any come backs after a jobs complete so take care every snag is sorted before getting customers final inspection, but no quibbling if they need to comeback to sort anything sharpish.
Most decent trades have regular customers and are booked up at least a couple of months ahead .
And keep busy by being reliable, keeping a job clean and doing a jobthey takepride in. Its getting harder to find them but they are out there if you can be arsed to look and check them out.

I have no doubt there are good trades people out there but it is literally impossible to find them amongst the myriad shysters, unless you try them all to find the good ones!
Word of mouth is the best option but if you don't know anyone who used them then you'll never find them.

I'd advise asking them thier last 5 jobs so you can go see thier work and chat to customer about them, it be difficult if thier dodgy to pick 5 friends or family to cover them.

You miss the point again ! Read deeper for the bigger picture of inequality on how the media brush off quickly after a day or two whats happened as it doesnt suit thier agenda ? It hasn't been brushed away though. I've heard about this story several times today - online and on the radio. There is absolutely no comparison between the two situations. It's just more nonsense from people who want to create divide over everything - people who just twist the truth until it suits their own agenda. No better than the agenda they have against the "MSM" - you know - the ones who have decided on their stance no matter what the truth is. More conspiracy guano.

You just can't compare a murder of a white elderly man on a mobility scooter by a younger white man in a random attack to what happened in the US with Floyd and the racial issues that followed. What would people be taking the knee in the name of regarding this murder ?
What you're suggesting is that every single murder in the UK should make the news for weeks, get candlelit vigils, demonstrations, riots, people taking the knee at sporting events etc. What about that poor Logan Mwangi from Bridgend that got murdered - we didn't see players taking the knee for him did we ? The media didn't just brush it aside did they ?

America has deep rooted racial issues but UK was getting to grips with it in recent times compared to the states. But all this floyd stuff has set it back decades with all the rioting with the yoof stealing tv's n Nike trainers etc in protest and the racist blm forming to divide even more. With those that formed it stealing massive ammounts in corruption and buying mansions in rich white areas you'd think is the last place they'd want to live given thier agenda ?
I don't know anyone that owned or has been a slave, but you can still buy and own them in Africa and middle East where it all started before westerners got involved in the evil trade, in fact north Africans took many westerners as slaves back in the day, but we ain't looking for revenge or reparations MONEY ! For it after all these years are we !
