As has been said, I can't see where Gaston fits into Koeman's style of play. Gaston's a CAM, he plays in the number 10 role, but Koeman doesn't play a number 10. Neither CM, nor the wing, really suits Gaston for me. I'm a big fan of the guy, and in a different setup I really believe he has potential. But the way we're likely to play this season, I'm sceptical.
I'd love to believe the guy will come good, and really hope that a sustained spell as a first teamer will give him back his confidence. Iirc when he signed he said something like " they told me they would build a team around me " implying he needed to feel like a key player in the team. I agree that perhaps the Koeman system won't give him the freedom to play his favoured position though, and it must be said that our history of Italian imports has not really panned out as we might have hoped. Taider in, fair enough, can't be worse than the "silly child" we swapped him for, but the schelotto rumours don't fill me with confidence. C'mon Gaston, prove that not all Italian players can't make the leap to the PL.
I love Gaston. And Vic. But likewise I agree that his obvious position is Number 10, which Koeman doesn't favour. But remember guys - we were all crying out for a Plan B last season. Any reason that a shift in formation and a substitution to bring on a 10 is unfeasible. After all, if the favoured formation isn't working in a game, change it. He still has a role to play (plus will be useful if, God forbid, Tadic gets injured etc).
First off, we don't have a lot of depth out wide, and Gaston can play out there (I'd actually prefer it given his lack of physicality when playing in the middle). Second, we could very well adopt a 3-4-1-2 type of thing as a plan B, which some of us have been crying out for for ages, and which is now being recognised by a lot of managers as a very useful strategy. Obviously we'd need more centre-backs, or to play midfielders at the back Sampaoli-style, to pull that off.
im praying he has an injury free season, I mean he was looking in excellent form in the 2nd half of last season until wes brown tried to kill him, then by the time he was fit again it was practically over.
This! Scored a good knock against everton as well although the keeper probably ought to have caught it.. Perhaps now we doesnt think he is mr big time he will start to perform!
