Some Cheltenham thoughts .............
Looking at the opening Ballymore Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham this seems to be a case of exposed horses (mainly summer jumpers looking for one last payday before the ground goes) against two totally unexposed types in Guy and L'Air Du Vent. Either would have to be pretty decent to take this on hurdles debut but I'm pretty sure their hugely experienced trainers wouldn't be putting them in here if they didn't think they were capable. I found
L'Air Du Vent's bumper win most impressive and will take him to bring home the bacon today.
The 2 mile novices chase looks like developing into a match between Al Dancer and Getwaway Trump, particularly with the prolific Caius Marcius carrying a double penalty. I don't share the market's current view and I think
Getaway Trump could be the one. A fascinating little contest.
The 3 mile novices chase looks to have more depth with a stern challenger from across the Irish sea in the shape of Gordon Elliot's Dinons. He romped to victory on this card last year and has valuable chasing experience under his belt, but he does have to concede weight to some useful looking rivals. Chief among these is Wholestone, who won on chase debut at Ayr despite jumping left BUT might find the ground lively enough today, despite the forecast light rain. If all eight go to post then
Minella Warrior might be a bit of e/w value.
The maiden hurdle looks a fascinating contest with Master Debonair finally making his hurdles debut after being held back for the champion bumper last season. He was disappointing at both Cheltenham and Aintree however and I can't have him at such cramped odds today. The talking horse is Lieutenant Henderson's Fred, with 3 placed efforts in France to his name. That form has not really been tested and came of very soft / heavy ground so I am a little wary given the current going. Cap Du Mathan comes to this off a long break and would need to have improved on his last run (a 2L defeat by Arverne, who showed little in the Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow won by Quel Destin). An honourable mention goes to Stolen Silver, who has joined the Twister from Sam Thomas and should go well on stable debut. But my idea of the winner is the dual bumper winning mare
Getariver from Dan Skelton's yard. The form of her second bumper win (under a penalty) has been well advertised by the 4th Henrietta Bell, who has since romped home off 120 in a mares handicap hurdle before hating the firm ground last time.
Good luck everyone
