Goldrush shows 24-carat promise with easy debut victory

Daughter of Frankel and Alexander Goldrun is impressive at Navan

    By Martin Stevens 6:31PM, SEP 2 2017

Brilliantly bred three-year-old filly Goldrush was last seen in public when bought by China Horse Club for €1.7 million at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in September 2015 and her long-awaited racecourse debut had been keenly anticipated.

On Saturday she showed she was well worth the wait as she powered to an impressive victory over 17 rivals in a mile maiden at Navan on her belated first run for trainer Jim Bolger.

Goldrush travelled sweetly for jockey Kevin Manning and hit the front two furlongs from home before drawing clear and finishing three lengths in front of runner-up Wooster, a Duke Of Marmalade gelding saddled by Joseph O'Brien, on the line.

“She did it very nicely, didn't she?” said Mick Flanagan, representing the China Horse Club at Navan. “We've had to be patient with her as each time she did faster work as a two-year-old she'd get a little bit weak, so we were happy to play the waiting game with her, and her pedigree said she'd be better at three and older anyway.

“We'd declared her a few times this year but the ground went against us and we wanted to do the best by her. I'm just so pleased now that we waited and that she has shown what Jim [Bolger] said he was seeing her do on the gallops.”

Flanagan said there were no specific targets in mind for the filly.

“To win like that first time up, you have to be good, and Kevin said when he got off her that he thought she'd improve a little,” he added. “We'll look to give her another run or two this season and hopefully we'll keep her in training at four when she could be even stronger.”

Third home at Navan was the Acclamation gelding World Tax War, trained by Jessica Harrington for owner and breeder Noel O'Callaghan of Mountarmstrong Stud – co-incidentally the breeder of Goldrush.

The reason the filly has been the talk of racing fans before she even stepped foot on a racecourse is not only her price-tag, but also the fact she is by unbeaten dual world champion Frankel out of O'Callaghan's exceptional racemare Alexander Goldrun.

Bolger sent out Alexander Goldrun, a daughter of Gold Away now 16, to win ten races including five at the highest level – the Prix de l'Opera, Hong Kong Cup, Nassau Stakes and two Pretty Polly Stakes. She also finished second in another five Group 1 races, most memorably when just coming off second best in a titanic struggle with Ouija Board in another Nassau Stakes.

Goldrush is only the third foal, second runner and first winner out of Alexander Goldrun, who has produced fewer foals than many mares her age due to bad luck.

The dam's first foal Juniper Tree, a son by Galileo, was a 950,000gns yearling and finished placed in two of his three starts before going to stud in Denmark, and her second was Pietrangelo, another colt by Galileo and a 400,000gns yearling who did not run for David Lanigan and was eventually sold on for just £2,000.

Alexander Goldrun also has a Shamardal two-year-old filly sold to Koji Maeda for €600,000 at Goffs last year, named Une Alliance and exported to Japan.

She has no yearling but delivered a colt foal by Muhaarar and was covered by Kodiac this year.

I've been working on the first crop stats based on results up to this afternoon (so including DREAM CASTLE's run in Turkey). This is where I think we are:

    124 went into training
    85 have run (68.5%)
49 are winners (57.6% of runners)
In addition a further 20 have placed (so 81.1% of his runners have either won or placed)

19 are Stakes horses (22.3% of runners have earned black-type):
    1 x G1 winner
4 x G2 winners (inc Cracksman who is also dual G1 placed)
    2 x G2 placed
6 x G3 winners (inc Fair Eva who is also G2 placed)
1 x Listed winner (Mori who is also G3 placed)
    5 x Listed placed

It's worth noting that of the 124 that went into training, 5 have been confirmed as retired without running - 4 fillies who all head to the paddocks and 1 gelding who has been rehomed. 3 other fillies have passed through the sale ring without running but no official confirmation that they have been sent to the paddocks.

So here is the spreadsheet. It's as up to date as I can make it for now and I'll relink it every now and then with additional updates. It includes Frankel's first 3 crops (3yos, 2yos and yearlings), once I'm back at work I'll be able to add in the 2017 foals.

    Enjoy!

You're more than welcome to do so Ron, I just pulled the stats that I thought were of most interest at the moment. I'm probably going to add in a sale price field at some point too.

Interesting to see what 1.8M euro gets you tomorrow night, especially as the dam has pretty much given birth to a load of cack!

I wonder what the stats are for Group 1 winning mares to produce Group 1 winning offspring?

€1.8m Frankel purchase 'well above standard' for Kempton debut

La Figlia sell for a then record price for an offspring of Frankel at Goffs
    Patrick McCann
    1 of 1
By Jon Lees UPDATED 6:12PM, SEP 4 2017

The regally bred La Figlia, one of the most expensive offspring of Frankel, will pique interest at Kempton's evening meeting on Tuesday when she makes her belated racecourse debut.

When she was knocked down to a representative of Australian entrepreneur Paul Makin for €1.8 million in 2014 she smashed the Irish foal record at Goffs.

The daughter of 2007 1,000 Guineas winner Finsceal Beo was put in training with William Haggas but moved yards late last year to Jeremy Noseda.

She was due to start her campaign in the spring until she suffered a setback and now launches her career in a 6f maiden under Ryan Moore.

Noseda said: "I got her last autumn, then she had a break. She was due to run at the Craven meeting but unfortunately got cast a couple of days beforehand and did herself some mischief.

"We had to give her six weeks doing nothing. It's been a long road back but thankfully we're back where we want to be."

Frankel, unbeaten in 14 starts in a brilliant racing career, has made a fine start to his stud career with his first three-year-olds including a Group 1 winner in Japan, Soul Stirring, and the Group 2 winners Cracksman and Eminent.

Jeremy Noseda: pleased to have his filly on the racecourse after 'long road'
    Edward Whitaker

On Saturday Frankel three-year-old Goldrush, a daughter of multiple Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun who cost €1.7m, made an impressive winning debut at Navan.

Noseda said: "With a filly you need to know if you do start her you feel sure she's going to at least be a winner. They're better unraced than unplaced.

"La Figlia is a pretty nice filly. She has to go and do it on the track but is well above the normal standard you see for a maiden at this time of year."

Even if as Noseda says she is well above this standard I think she'll have to be to win fto over trip that must be short of ideal considering she had previously been entered at 8f. Doesn't have a great draw either

    Edited to clarify:

EMINENT confirmed for a possible tilt at the Irish Champion Stakes with Dettori up. Connections have said they will monitor declarations on Thursday before taking a final decision.

If he runs he is unlikely to go to the Arc, unless "he wins, and wins well". It is intended to keep him in training next year.

A bit disappointing as she wasn't going away from the one that followed her. The one in blue who finished 5th (I think) came from a long way back and might be worth making a note of.

As per my spreadsheet you will have seen that SENATOR and SEVEN HEAVENS have been sold to Hong Kong.

SENATOR has been renamed SIMPLY BRILLIANT.
