Personally I can't stand rap but I think music is a very personal thing and we don't have the right to condemn anothers tate. Will rap stand the test ot time? I haven't the faintest idea.
Perhaps it's not really supposed to. I love Soca. However in T&T most people can't tell you what the title is of a song on the radio or who's singing it. They don't really car as its the sound that they are listening to now that is important - not what the heard yesterday. If you play a song from say 2 Carnivals ago they call it Old Time!
RAP is going through a difficult time at the moment, all that is left is the mainstream, something that is the complete opposite of what RAP music is supposed to be i.e an urban sound from the streets and people.
Instead of cleverly using loops onto tracks they now rely on the chorus and background music in order to sell the albums. Eminem was one of the mainstream artists to take advantage of this although it does go further back to Tupac and Biggie and of course Puff Daddy as the real inventor of this pop heavy rap.
It seems that you always have to look back to get the best of any music and the best artists understand this and stick to the roots while using them in the correct way, RAP will continue but I hope that a new generation can come through from the US. At the moment the UK grime scene has more credibility.
