RAP is going through a difficult time at the moment, all that is left is the mainstream, something that is the complete opposite of what RAP music is supposed to be i.e an urban sound from the streets and people. Instead of cleverly using loops onto tracks they now rely on the chorus and background music in order to sell the albums. Eminem was one of the mainstream artists to take advantage of this although it does go further back to Tupac and Biggie and of course Puff Daddy as the real inventor of this pop heavy rap. It seems that you always have to look back to get the best of any music and the best artists understand this and stick to the roots while using them in the correct way, RAP will continue but I hope that a new generation can come through from the US. At the moment the UK grime scene has more credibility.
I know you're not a fan dave but try this for great rhythm with an old beat and good use of the loop.
luv, I do prefer new stuff like this to any rap
You posted this for me before or maybe another track by them, pretty good beat behind it. Don't love it but find it interesting. May listen to some others. What did you think of my slightly drunk defence of rap and the Wu tang track?
Luv I think you made your points very well and the Wu Tang track is interesting but doesn't move me in any way. For me Tame Impala are interesting it's not the best but it's an attempt to produce something new. They are not ripping -off (sorry sampling) other people's stuff they are producing their own! For me that is the essential difference. But I have a ready out as I'm old and can therefore fall back upon Music stopped in (insert the appropriate year) AND bolshie enough to take no notice of the responses
Don't get me wrong I am not slagging off new music and like some old farts saying "nothing good has been written since 1972". I have the Tame Impala cd's and whilst not brilliant they are interesting. At the same time that rap and 50 cents were coming out of USA there was also bands like The North Mississippi Allstars who were kids playing bluegrass blues type music and they are worth a listen.
But seriously I like a bit of bluegrass I was introduced to it through the O'Brother where art though film, which is great.
