Yeah I know. I mean, yes, he could probably live on what he's already earned forever but he has a limited time to earn big moeny and he and his wife will have a certain lifestyle they want to maintain etc etc

Yep, I do actually agree.

I can't remember if we have even had a thereisonlyoneno7 rant on here before :) Must be the Dry January effecting me.

I suspected that, hence the summer rumblings.

I understand why he'd want it to remain private - no-one wants to be the bad guy and he has always had a special relationship with the fans.

I also understand the club wanting it out there. Why should they take the flack when an offer comes in that we accept?

There is no right or wrong here. Both parties are trying to deal with it as best as possible. Some fans will use this an excuse to kick the board and some to kick a player leaving.

We move on.... or march on ... to Southampton Way.... or whatever.

Why couldn't they have made it public once an offer game in and was accepted?????

Agreed. This is my one slight concern about this. If Fonte stays then Reed's interview may perhaps have made things worse. If he goes then it possibly doesn't matter so much.

Thing is, even though I don't have any idea what your job is, I presume you'll be able to do it until you're in your 60s or even 70s. Fonte has less than 5 years of earning big money left.

Thats irrelevant if you earn £4-5m a year. That works out to 178 years compared to someone on the average age. I would rather work for 1 year than 178 years :)

I thought he was on about £70k at the moment (and turned down something more like £100k) which is more like £3.5m a year. Not that that really changes your point.

Even so, it's not totally irrelevant. I mean I'm sure he could retire today and live what most people would consider a comfortable life in a 3 bed semi somewhere. I imagine he's used to a certain lifestyle though and will want to maintain that as best he can for the rest of his life.

But when they have that money they arent going to spend like your average person and get reliable little motor to park outside their 200k house they got on a sensible mortgage and just make the £5m last a lifetime. They're going to park a Ferrari outside their mansion and want to continue that lifestyle forever.

And I don't blame them!

And guarantee their kids future financial well-being too.

I did actually answer that earlier. Fonte's leaving could simply have been used to stop another transfer going through assuming that was a factor. Regardless, let's flip it. Is the situation resolved now? No. Should it have been? Yes. Surely a sensible chap like you can see that viewpoint just as easily as your own. Fonte, purely because he IS Fonte, is a special case and one we have not handled well at all.

What do you mean, us letting Fonte go in the last two weeks of the window could have stopped what transfer? Mane, Wanyama? Van Dijk this summer/summer after?

Unless I've missed something your solution to our problem of our captain and club legend wanting a transfer (And to a select few clubs, not just wanting to leave full stop) is just to have actively tried to sell him, meaning selling him for a poor price to whomever takes him. Surely you can see that is not a solution to any of our problems, given the whole battle over our image as a 'selling club'. How does that stop any transfers rather than completely undermine our bargaining power with players and clubs? The only possible upside to that mad powerplay is Fonte and Mendes somehow weakly buckling and accepting a new contract.

The (realistic) options I can see are:

Refuse to let him leave, no contract offer.
Refuse to let him leave, club-friendly contract offer.
Refuse to let him leave, player-friendly contract offer.
Set his price where we want it for anyone to match, same three contract variables.
Set his price where we want for non-PL to match, same three contract variables.
Set his price for anyone/non-PL, accept only on condition of acquiring a replacement we want, same contract variables.
Actively try and sell him.
Can't think of any more, release him I guess?

All have various pros/cons and branching possible outcomes, none are ideal because the bottom line is the only outcome we want is him accepting a new contract, or his current one I suppose. Once that isn't possible then it's just a matter of working for the best case scenario, which we have tried to do (and possibly succeeded, who knows?).

So basically I think your equation is incomplete. Is the situation resolved now? No. Should it have been? Yes. Could it have been? No. (Unless said resolution is the nuclear option)

He has to be able to afford the insurance on his Bentley somehow.

Does this help your grumpy mood? <laugh> Go on... it's raining here so dry January is over man!

OMG. I actually licked my lips as i scrolled that picture.

I'm also on the 5:2 diet and today is a fast day. 500 calories all day. I think you can see where my grumpiness is coming from ;)

EDIT: And to make it worse I have done a 40 min workout at the Gym and walked the dogs for 3 miles. God I'm hungry

A bottle of wine on fast day won't hurt. Trust me I speak from experience!
