Looking in street life museum a bit back, and the ice cream shop on Pier was there, and it doesn't seem that long ago I used it. I remember wishing to get some of the bikes that are in there too.

What common things from your youth would youngsters today not really know?

I'll start.

Manual choke on cars.
Hand cranked windows on cars and some buses.
TV without a remote.
Cine cameras
Circular dials on telephones.
Wind up clocks.
Radio Luxembourg.
Metal dustbins. (with no wheels)
Smoking on buses and at work, cinemas etc.
Sticking your head out of the train door window.
Slam shut train doors.
4 star petrol.
Deposits on lemonade bottles.
Typewriters.

Fresh unpasturised milk, a clip around the ear, a porn mag, bread dipped in proper bacon fat, a policeman nicking a burglar, miners strikes, power cuts and no shopping over christmas.

Going out and socialising.

Being able to buy single cigarettes.

Not being able to buy alcohol except at restricted times and only in licensed premises and from off licences and alcohol to drink at home was as dear, and dearer, than in a pub.

Having to use an operator to phone far off places like York.

Scooter weekend in Brid. Listening to the original sixties ones revving up and getting a whiff of the two stroke took me back. Oh for Friday nights, hearing " The Weekend Starts Here" and settling down for Ready, Steady, Go!
