Jack Wild, actor who played Artful Dodger in 'Oliver!' dies at 53
LONDON (AP) — Jack Wild, who earned an Oscar nomination as a teenager for his role as the Artful Dodger in the 1968 film Oliver! has died from cancer, his agent said Thursday. He was 53.

Wild died Wednesday, agent Alex Jay said. The actor was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2000, and surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy had left him unable to speak.

Born in Royton, northwest England, in 1952, Wild was spotted by a talent agent while playing soccer in a London park and later attended stage school.

He appeared in the London stage production of Oliver! Lionel Bart's adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Wild was cast in the film as cheeky pickpocket the Artful Dodger, a role that earned the 16-year-old an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

Wild also was known to a generation of children as the hero of H.R. Pufnstuf, a psychedelic TV series about a boy stranded on a fantastical island with a talking flute, a friendly dragon and eerie, chatty trees. A feature film, Pufnstuf, was released in 1970.

He became a teen music idol, releasing three albums —The Jack Wild Album,Everything's Coming up Rosesand Beautiful World.

But Wild struggled with alcoholism and his adult acting career was fitful, although he had a role in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991.

The actor blamed his cancer on years of heavy drinking and smoking. "My lifestyle had made me a walking time bomb," he said last year.

Wild is survived by his wife, Claire Harding.

Anyone seen dead mans' shoes?

I have pal,****ing brilliant film!Some of the lines in it crease me up,Paddy Considine's one of my favourite actors.Anyway,impossible task to name 10 greatest films,but i'll list 10 classics that haven't been named,but should be viewed at least once!
Angels With Dirty Faces,the definitive gangster film from the golden era,with a searing performance from the great Jimmy Cagney.
Citizen Kane,Orson Welles' towering work.
A Night At The Opera,probably the Marx brothers finest hour.Just genius comedy at work.
Blazing Saddles,utterly hilarious if not totally p.c these days!
Paths Of Glory,the greatest war film ever made,just sums up the utter futility of it all,heartbreaking!
Jason And The Argonauts,stirring epic with Ray Harryhausen's stop motion monsters showing c,g,i how it's done.
Scott Of The Antarctic,John Mills' stiff upper lip on the infamous doomed expedition.
Alive,true story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crashed in the Andes.For god's sake Beth,don't watch this without a big box of Kleenex at the ready!
Enter The Dragon,just the greatest martial arts film ever made,Bruce in his pomp!
Jaws,just scared people witless about going into the sea,just love Robert Shaw in this!
I've left other people classics such as Casablanca,The Aviator,The Dead Zone,Fantasia,The Hill,The Producers,Chariots Of Fire,Blow,The Sting and Trains,Planes and Automobiles! Too many now,off to bed.

I'm not surprised Fourty ... Worse film I've ever seen! Myself and Mrs Nines fell asleep in the Wimbledon Odeon trying to watch this. It felt like it went on for weeks. We're so traumatised we haven't been back since. Except for Police Academy 53.

I'm not surprised Fourty ... Worse film I've ever seen! Myself and Mrs Nines fell asleep in the Wimbledon Odeon trying to watch this. It felt like it went on for weeks. We're so traumatised we haven't been back since. Except for Police Academy 53.

It's the place Nines as I go there a lot as it's just around the corner from me
Went to watch inception years back and five of us fell asleep

Captain Tom hanks thing fell asleep
I have missed many great films there as has many of my friends
Even dropped off waiting for pop corn
