I don't watch that many films, so it's not a top ten chosen from a wide pool, nonetheless.... Imitation Game - a gripping account of genius, code breaker and war hero Alan Turing. American Beauty - a reflection of what life is really like living the American dream. Clockwise - John Cleese's best work 'I can take the despair, it's the hope I can't stand' (to become the strap line on the new QPR badge) A Serious Man - a black comedy set in '50s America, plotting one man's midlife crisis with family, work and religion. The Counterfeiters - based on a true story of concentration camp prisoners who are forced to print fake money to finance the Nazis. Fiddler on the Roof - Topol's fine rendition of an oppressed milkman seeking fortune and love in Tsarist Russia. All or Nothing - a Mike Leigh gritty 'window on the world' of three families growing up on an sprawling suburb of London. Any Human Heart - a gripping journey through the 20th Century through the life of one man. The Damned United - an excellent biopic of Old Big 'Ead. ID - a gritty throwback to the hooligan days of the early 80s - two coppers infiltrate a firm and get drawn in too far.
Cool hand luke. Guns of navorone. Educating Rita. Scum. Shawshank redemption. GI blues. Any Cagney film.
Nice list Sku. American Beauty though is about much more than that. Note the smile on Kevin Spacey's face at the end. Any Human Heart - wasn't that a telly series?
You're right on both points. Dock one point for AHH! As for American Beauty, as you note, there's much more than my banal one-liner; so many great sub plots; and great character development.
My list would be as follows: Deliverance Goodfather 1 Goodfather 2 Once upon the time in the America Pulp Fiction Forrest Gump Seven Whiplash Life of Brian Shawshank Redemption Airplane! All about my mother / Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown Shining Papillion Escape from Alcatraz Raging Bull One who flew over the cuckoons nest
Life of Brian One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Apocalypse Now Brighton Rock (the 1947 original) Help! Quadrophenia The Godfather I & II Scum Midnight Express The Third Man
Some good stuff here, although a few seem to struggle with the idea of a top ten - I think Igor leads with 17! Interesting that the usual list-toppers, The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption don't figure that much. I may do a proper count, but I think Quadrophenia might have the most votes so far. Shepherd's Bush and all that.
Great thread Stroller. I think we've had a couple of these before as you have mentioned but they always seem to go down well. I do enjoy the extra snippets of info stating why someone likes a particular film especially if it's one I haven't seen and would compel me to seek it out. I think all of my favourite films are already listed. So although this list isn't my real top ten, it's ten films that aren't already listed ( hopefully ) that I've enjoyed. A Bronx Tale Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Scent of a Woman The Fisherking Fargo The Truman Show Malcolm X Another World Cemetery Junction Fury (2014)

Lester, 54, says he donated sperm to the superstar a year before the birth of the King of Pop’s first child. And the father-of-four told yesterday how he was struck by the likeness between Jackson’s children and his own family, in particular daughters Olivia and Harriet. He said: “Olivia looks like Paris. People have pointed out the similarities between myself when I was younger and Prince.” Lester – who shot to fame in the 1968 film musical Oliver! – is godfather to Jackson’s children. But he has only seen them once, at a memorial service, since their father’s death in June 2009 and says he is concerned about their upbringing. Last month he was invited to Los Angeles by the star’s former manager Dieter Weisner but was told he would not be able to see the children. The youngsters are set to take the witness stand in a £26billion lawsuit brought by the family against concert promoter AEG Live. Lester told how the family had stopped answering his calls and had left him feeling “locked out”. please log in to view this image The actor says the likeness between him and Prince Michael is more than coincidence Olivia looks like Paris. People have pointed out the similarities between myself when I was younger and Prince. Mark Lester Jackson and his family have always vehemently denied claims the children were not his. Lester said: “I just feel it is really cruel that our relationship has just been cut off. It is not what Michael would have wanted. “After Michael asked me to donate sperm for him I completely forgot about it. He was a great dad to them so I just didn’t go there but there is obviously a good possibility [that I could be the biological father]. I wouldn’t have a DNA test without the children’s permission but when the children come of age, and it’s not far away, and they decide they want me to do it, then I will. “It is up to them. I don’t want to tell them what to do. I just want to reconnect and be the godfather Michael made me.” Lester first met the singer in 1978 at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, north London, where the star was performing with the Jackson 5. The pair were both 20 at the time and immediately hit it off. Lester said: “We ended up great friends. Every time Michael came to the UK, which was at least six times a year, I used to take my children to see his. They always got on really well. Olivia and Harriet would play with Paris. I even took the kids to his home in the US. We were like one big happy family.” In 1991 Lester had his first child with first wife Jane. Two years later his daughter Harriet was born and in 1995 he fathered his third daughter Olivia. He also has a son Felix, 13. Lester is now an osteopath in Cheltenham, Glos. http://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-...-I-m-the-father-of-Michael-Jackson-s-children
It's a dinner party favourite question of mine to ask folks to name their top three films. It's fun to see if you've guessed their character right. I have a firm 1st and 3rd but the second is flexible because there are so many good films! So I'll limit my list to three. 1) Cheating already since I'll name The Lord of the Rings trilogy as one and top pick. Enthralled with the book over the years. Must have read it more than 12 times and never get bored of escaping into Tolkien's world. Jackson did an incredible job of exceeding the expectations of many LOTRs fans with his films. For example, the Balrog scene. Incredibly good. 2) the genre is action and it's a very tough call between Gladiator and Heat. Perhaps Braveheart gets a shout too as do many of Clint's movies such as Josey Wales. However the chemistry between Pacino and De Niro is just fantastic so Heat gets number two. 3) Don't think listed yet but love Message in A Bottle. For two reasons. It reminds me who my True North is and secondly the end is more true to life than many movies. You'll have to watch it to find out why!
I fought you was winding me up cos Felix just happens to be my name! Anyway, I was talking to the old man today and sure enough he said he worked with "Oliver"s Dad and that "Olivier" took to the drink and died a young man. I think my old man might be losing it a bit
Godfather Trilogy Amelie One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest To Kill A Mockingbird Bourne Trilogy The Exorcist Dr Zhivago Chaplin's The Kid Gone With The Wind The Birds Pyscho
I used to love the Tolkien books and was eagerly looking forward to the Jackson interpretation. The start of the first film brought tears to my eyes, as his re-creation of Hobbiton seemed so perfect, but I soon got bored. The films just seem to move from one battle scene to another - but on reflection, so did the books.
The other child star in that production of Oliver, Jack Wild, who played the artful dodger died of alcohol and smoking about 10 years ago
