Other than 'Only Fools...' I never watched the classics. But even when I see them now, I appreciate the skill and the wit required to have produced them. When I see some of the crap that's on now, especially on the BBC, I want to punch something. 20 years ago the BBC had 'Only Fools...'. 10 years ago it had 'The Office'. What does it have now? That ****ing God-awful show 'Coming of Age'. <doh>

Aye there's appreciation, but few of them have had me belly laughing that much - maybe I just need to watch a couple all in a row to get with the characters a bit more?

...I enjoyed Him and Her on the BBC, didn't think it was amazing but some very clever, dry writing! I agree coming of age is ****ing shocking and 2 pints of lager is horrendous, I would be happy to base all future relationships, platonic or otherwise on whether they find that shower of ****e in the least bit amusing!

Green Wing on C4 was amazing!

"TIMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!!"

...."daddy"

Great stuff. Loved Ivan Dobsky and Mr Hoppy too.

Is it just me who thinks Ivan Dobsky is exactly like David Charlton? The voice, the fact he's a prisoner desperate to stay in jail, the fact he's from the North-East...?

is it worth getting then?

I really don't know! It's up to you! It is a quality show, but for anything not in Series One there's always YouTube I suppose. :undecided:

It's definitely worth seeing. Season 1 on DVD, Seasons 2 & 3 on bit torrent.

No votes for Father Ted. Careful now, down with that sort of thing .. also No Black Adder, Fast Show, Red Dwarf, Fawlty, Black Books .. Honoury mentions to our colonial cousins ..Sgt Bilko & Arrested Development (good enough to be classed as British)

It's clearly all opinion based but I'd say officially the greatest comedy has to be Only Fools & Horses. Not a personal favourite of mine but I can understand why it's top of the tree.

For me it's The Office, I got it completely and it is probably the most revolutionary comedy of all time. There's no coincidence that Ricky Gervais has catapulted his way directly into the Hollywood A-list off the back of his & Steve Merchant's ingenious ideas.

If you're having Trigger Happy TV in there then you have to have The Fonejacker too seeing as it was 10 times better and not hosted by one of the most boring 'comedians' of all time.

it should be said again and again though:

Blackadder Goes Forth is the absolute pinnacle of British Comedy and has not yet been bettered, and I doubt it ever will.
And the end of last episode should be a lesson for all American comedies on how to do heartwrenching without schmaltz.

Totally this, Goes Fourth was brilliant, funny, poignant, fantastically acted & written. Hugh Lawrie in the last episode as Lt George talking about the Eton tiddly winkers was class.

Also add to the list IT crowd & "Speed" episode of Father Ted.

My top 10 would be:

Red Dwarf
Only Fools and Horses
Fawlty Towers
Auf Wiedershen, Pet
I'm Alan Partridge
Black Adder
The Inbetweeners
Phoenix Nights
Likely Lads
Not Going Out

Not sure we can count IT Crowd, Black Books and Father Ted as British as they were written by an Irishman, the same Irishman actually <ok>

What is everyone's favourite panel show? I can't decide between Shooting Stars, Would I Lie to you, Celebrity Juice and 8 out of 10 cats.

Shooting Stars, Cats, Buzzcocks or Would I Lie to you would be mine. Can't stand Keith Lemon so never watch Celebrity Juice!

This!

Out of that list I had to choose The Young Ones, but there are so many absolute quality British comedy's that I'd be hard pressed to pick only one favourite; Monty Python, Porridge, The Young Ones, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Only Fools, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted, Rab C Nesbit, League of Gentlemen, Auf Weidersehen Pet all spring directly to mind when I read the title of this article!

Whilst I normally laugh at just about anything, I've never seen an episode of The Royal Family or The Office all the way through to the end because of the lack of anything remotely humerous that I've seen!

Missed out some classics though on this list, I mean, no Blackadder?! Also Bread was quite good, up to the point where they changed the original actor for Joey, but seriously this list is utter ****e.

How could I have forgotten Dad's Army or Allo Allo, I could easily sit and watch those again.

Can anyone remember a comedy called 'The Strangerers', about alien vegetables? I think they only ever made one series but I thought it was hilarious!

Bottom, Father Ted, The Young Ones, The Inbetweeners, The IT crowd.

Would of had these ahead of those mind Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Monty Python, Dads army.

The old Shooting stars, new one is crap imo.

Would say Mock the Week though.

I cannot stand Celebrity Juice with ****s like Jedward & Lemon.
