Hey up there mate, Just a few questions I would like to ask

- Whats the difference between a scooter and a moped ?

- From what I can gather if you've held a car license from before Feb/2001 you
don't need to do the CBT thing, Is this right ?

- How much can I expect to pay for tax and insurance ?

- Will a scooter support 17 1/2 stone of solid yorshireman ?

I'm off to the Shetlands for several months next week and thought I might pick up a used moped while I'm there for bombing around on but for all I know they might be like rocking horse **** up there, I will have a look anyway. Grateful for any info, Cheers.

Hey up there mate, Just a few questions I would like to ask

The dictionary definition of a scooter is 'a two-wheeled motorized vehicle with a step-through frame ridden like a motorcycle', a moped is traditionally a powered bicycle(so has pedals) and is below 50cc.

You need to take your CBT to ride anything(but all you really need to do to pass is not fall off!), once you've done this you can ride anything up to a 125cc, anything above this and you need to take the full bike test. The CBT only lasts a couple of years though, so if you want to ride a 125 on a CBT you have to keep taking it every couple of years.

That's complete down to what you get, if it's a classic Lambretta/Vespa it's tax exempt, I've no idea what a modern one costs to tax. A classic Lambretta worth about £3k is just over £100 to insure, again I've no idea about the modern stuff.

A Lambretta is built around a frame that is basically just a shaped scaffolding pole, so you could eat a few more pies and still be fine. I'm not sure I'd fancy bombing around on a 50cc moped though, not unless you can plan your route avoiding all hills. <laugh>

Hope this helps <ok>

Cheers, Hmmmmm looks like I'll have to try and organise the CBT test up there ( If I do find a scooter )
Looks like the insurance will be cheap that's good news, Thanks alot.
