This was an excellent interview from Alan Pardew, only about four and a half minutes and well worth watching if you haven't seen it already.

He makes an in-direct plea to Mike Ashley to stop selling our best players if Newcastle United are ever going to challenge for the Champions League positions again.

We sell our best players, loan in other clubs' players and wonder why we're not actually achieving anything?

Alan Pardew has impressed me and the more I look at his term as manager at St James' Park, you have to say that the only reason we haven't progressed more is because of the complete lack of backing from the owner.

At this point we're about to lose our best player for a big profit and then borrow another one from someone else.

When you consider what Pardew is left with in terms of quality players that we own, he's doing a fantastic job - I begin to wonder just exactly how long it will be before someone else realises his excellent work, takes him to their club and leaves us with Joe Kinnear to get us relegated.

The main points are in the last minute of the interview - about the CL and how you have to keep your best players & give the the squad the belief that the club is ambitious to return there.

I think it's fair to say that Mike Ashley is not interested in getting into the Champions League and has no ambition outside of staying in the Premier League.

I don't need to listen to it, his comments about Cabaye said the same thing. He sent out a plea then saying if we lost a player of that calibre, they would need to be replaced. Until he hasn't been, there's no complaints. The De Jong deal is good work - we should be taking him on loan, with an option to buy. I'd be more worried if we spunked a ton of cash on him, given his abject failure in a similar league. It's not like the Remy deal, which I don't really like, but I don't see Everton fans pi$$ing and moaning about Lukaku and Traore.

I don't know why anyone get so fcking annoyed about this stuff. Cabs is 29 this year and has 3 assists this season. The guy's talented, but went on strike for the first month, or would we rather vilify the manager who coaxed him out of his sulk whilst supporting the petulance that may have cost us a few points?

Pards is a good manager. His comments are always on the money. Unfortunately it doesn't matter who you appoint as a manager, the other side of things isn't going to change. We are going to go about things in a very slow and financially prudent fashion. If a bit of progress can be achieved through clever management then all the better. I bet Pardew has learnt more here than he has in his entire career beforehand. Its a challenging role he has. He is a proper football man and despite what some might think, he is as passionate as they come.

He'll stay where he is not because he is the bottom feeder some believe. But because despite all the bollocks that surrounds it at boardroom/DOF level etc, its a cracking football club with a great set of supporters. Football runs deep in these parts (yes I include the unwashed in that too). If I was a manager I'd fancy working up here too.

Sitting in 8th place is more or less the most realistic achievement for our club under the regime we have. A regime we can't touch nor do anything about. It is impossibly ludicrous to yearn for more. It's like yearning to be a multi-millionaire, or yearning to have Charlize Theron regularly giving free BJ's.

My option has been to pay no cash into it. So I observe, comment, support in my way, but ultimately given the overarching problem of capitalism in football, in time I will likely just disappear. Interest has already waned from watching a lot of matches, to only watching "big" games, to now only watching Newcastle. Even then, I haven't been to a game in two years.

Between now and the 1st September, we'll sign at least 3. Guaranteed is obviously a stupid thing for me to say, as I can't, but that's my comment. We operate as a calendar year of procurement - for 2013, we signed around 7, for 2012 we signed around 5 or 6. I don't understand why anyone thinks we won't sign at least 3 players this calendar year.

Pardew is in this for the long haul and he won't be going anywhere. All the team above us wouldn't want him and the teams below us would never give him a better contract. Ashley won't sack him and Pardew would never quit. So he won't be going anywhere in the concievable future.

I do agree with you though in regards to signings. De Jong on loan is the best we can hope for now. If we lose Cisse and with Shola leaving (he has to surely?) then we have two on loan strikers - Remy who won't stay and De Jong (well hopefully). To me, that looks like Mike Ashley sucking the football-life out of people.

Compromise has set-in with you and apathy also... It's not a criticism, just an observation.

Just to give up and say "I can't change or affect anything" is a pretty down-beat view in my humble opinion.

This is key for me. The club invested wisely after the last big sale and if they do it again I'll have no complaints. I'd love it to be in the next three days, but the time to take stock properly will be at the end of the next window.

I make this comment every time someone attempts to be rational and philosophical about our position. "Fan" is short for fanatic, when have you ever known a fanatic to be rational and philosophical about things? We have ambition, it's in our nature, and I don't think it's ludicrous that a fan yearns for more, especially a Newcastle fan at this moment, when clubs which don't have anywhere near the same support or potential for mass market exploitation are actually intent on building and achieving something.

ACS is happy with watching a team in constant transition, and seeing good players achieve nothing here, but I am not. We've got a system in place to sign good players, why the f*** wouldn't you just fill a squad with them and go for something?!?!?! Champions League is profitable Mr Ashley

You could well be right - Pardew is at a great club with great fans - but looking at West Ham United... unfinished business there for him and Sam Allardyce looks far from safe.

You have to weigh-in the factor of Pardew's frustration... he led the club into the Europa League but wasn't backed with the funds to make the squad good enough and we started to fail like Swansea are this season because of European matches mid-week. He's on the verge of doing it again this season knowing full well that he won't get the funds to bolster the squad with high-enough-quality numbers.

Walking out is just the cowards way. Its too easy just to down tools when things aren't exactly how you'd like them to be. He knew what he was taking on when he took the job, why would he bottle it now?

He may not get a better job. Outside the top 7 or so, its as good as any other on the market. Given the top end jobs all go to foreign managers. There are only 4 Englishman managing in the top division. One of them is on a temporary contract (Sherwood). To be honest this theory just doesn't hold any water whatsoever and the others are Hull and West Ham.

I can't think of many managers who walk away because they're not getting their own way nowadays.
