It was remarkable and admirable that he fought his way back to play at the highest level again, but this surely has to be it for him?

It gets to the point where it just isn't worth the risk.
Totally agree. Time to hang up the playing boots for sure. Health is everything.

A truly great player for club and country, but his resilience in recovering after the first episode displayed an internal strength that maybe we didn't credit him with as a player.

As much as his comment may be seen as racist - and in our Orwellian world, it was probably better not said - there is scientific evidence to support the view that people find it more difficult to recognise faces of people from different ethnic backgrounds. When people are less diverse in their ethnicity and share more similar characteristics, that difficulty is compounded.
So there you go.
Keep your mouth shut and can't offend anybody - except those who demand an answer.

It is a strange world in so many ways. Would I have said it in 2026? No. I doubt whether I would have said it in 1986. But should the VdV comment be labelled' racist' at all? Really?

As you say, not only is there scientific evidence that naturally blurs human perceptions of ethnic features, but surely context and any malicious intent also have to be considered before applying that serious tagline.

Trouble is, the application of balance doesn't make clickbait headlines

Don't get me wrong, Racism is a still sadly endemic in societies around the World and is a serious - and sadly, a growing - problem which must be addressed. But I fear that to focus attention at this level of 'offence' does more damage to that fight than can be imagined. Others more closely affected might rightly disagree.
