I met and was lucky enough to speak with him a few times on away trips (when you used to share the train carriages with the players!) and he was just an impressive human being. I was just a star-struck teenager, but he made time and was happy to talk about the match and the game in general. (To be fair, I can't remember any of the lads of the 71-74 era who didn't happily engage with the fans)
The recovery he made from that horrendous injury was quite amazing, but he's 100% correct - he always had the fans on his side.
