That is not what the article says though. It says they haven't agreed a deal (which is where he is saying he is misquoted). Nothing about not having met and discussed terms at all which has to have happened. Whether it should have done without agreeing compensation is debatable (we might have agreed to let them talk and negotiate compo but that seems risky if things fall through)
Another very big consideration, that will impact on teams, such as Saints, West Ham, Leicester and Everton making the top 6, next season is that neither Liverpool or Chelsea are involved in Europe, so I would expect both of them to be challenging for the top 4, alongside the other usual suspects - United, City, Arsenal and Spurs.
They will both be able to maintain massive squads, playing little football, keeping their best players fit and fresh for weekend league matches.
Everton, should they start well, could actually benefit from us, Leicester and West Ham being over stretched, owing to Europe, which would be a real shame, but they will be hard pushed to finish above 7th.

I am sure I read or heard something a while ago that stated due to the way the marketing deals are arranged Man United actually make back a lot of what they pay Rooney whenever he plays.

The Rooney situation is actually an little-noted side effect of the huge money the really big clubs pay. They can obviously tempt pretty much anyone away from any other club but when someone like Rooney has a huge contract and their performance fall off a cliff the club struggles to get rid because so few clubs can afford his wage demands and he simply isn't good enough for those clubs any more.
I've been thinking what my response might be if after several days we hear that Koeman comes out of it saying, no, I'm not leaving Southampton and never intended to.
