It's more good football. Audiences for all the matches in the CL (even with all the current teams) is absolutely immense, so there's still ample money to be made from them. Cutting down the teams to just the league champions would completely slash CL revenue and make the tournament incredibly short.

The Europa League, on the other hand, probably does suffer from this slightly. They're putting teams in that tournament for any old reason now.

Still a fair few million if you can get reasonably far.[/QUOTE]

that's what the program was going on about, it's only worth being in it if you possibly can win it.

as much as it pains me to say it chappaz, your lot has had some european nights a while ago, but forget the champions league, would you rather win the FA cup or qualify for the europa?

    Not sure to be honest.

Right now, with our plan to spend big in the summer, I'd want us to be in the Europa League. This is a tournament which is more renowned and well-known throughout Europe, so we would have a chance of attracting better European players who want European football.

Other than that though, the FA Cup.

For me it would be winning the FA Cup over Europa qualification.

Whilst European nights are great; winning such a famous trophy as the FA Cup would mean more to me personally and also ensure that some silverware was won during my life time!

They should definately stop the champion's league dropout's playing in the europa later rounds. If they really want this competiton taken seriously, give the europa league finalist's a pass into the following seasons champions league, that would make people sit up and take notice.

Well, i'd take the trophy any day of the week.

    BUT,

The figures as posted by chappaz show there is some financial bonus to be had, and the nail of the head was hit, again by chappaz (is he Mackem??), that for a club outside the European picture, participation in the Europa League represents the best chance of raising your profile, the standard of players you can attract, and therefore your hopes of ever breaking into Champions League contention.

Back to the St Petersburg on a Thursday night question, if we ever make Europe, i will be there, absolutely.

If we were there regularly, then i'd pick and choose, but first time, i'll be going.

I probably will be retired by the time we get there anyway!

By the way, does anyone feel like the Carling Cup has dropped in class ever since Birmingham won it? It just doesn't seem as special as it once was.

I think the same would happen to the FA Cup if Stoke win.

The only games I'd realistically be able to see would be French, maybe Belgian and Dutch at a stretch. The furthest I've ever travelled was from Jersey to Naples!

I can see where you are coming from regarding money, however, I feel that the profile of domestic competitions such as the FA Cup has suffered badly with all the focus on the Champions League.

FA cup is the greatest cup comp in the world. The fa should hang their heads in shame at how they have let the prestige of it slide. Some of the wembley cash could have kept the prize money competitive. Put the prize money in and the teams will stop this weakened side nonsense. Would love love love it we won it in my lifetime.

I would rather win the FA Cup than qualify for Europe, but I would rather win the Europa League or qualify for Champions League than the FA Cup.

No, I'm saying that if we qualified and won then I would prefer that over an FA cup, but if we just qualified and played a few games, I would rather win the FA cup.
