I remember when he signed, he was very complimentary about Palace - but simply said he felt Saints and himself could reach the Premier League together.

Just had a look about at the stats. It appears José has made 195 appearances for Saints, meaning his 200th should be Burnley away on the 13th of December.

Which is why there was a fair bit of comment as to why he didn't get a shout in the current England team this time. There's an argument that could be made that Bertrand is playing every bit as well as Clyne, plus he's proven on the big stage. Why not..? He's an excellent defender and, on current form, he has far more genuine product than Shaw.
Absolutely agree, but to be fair, Keiran Gibbs is playing very well for England as well. Ryan is in the unenviable position of being behind Baines, Shaw, and Gibbs, despite his excellent form for Saints. I would hope that in the next set of England games he might get a chance, as well as (hopefully) Jack Cork.
In a similar unenviable way that Nat Clyne was always in our thoughts, as Roy Hodgson put it, when asked why he continued to pick Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker [when fit], and anybody else he could come up with. If Hodgson really had been positive and observing well, then Clyne could have gone to the last World Cup. He needs to recognise quality and form much more quickly. Baines is in the latter part of his career and is the least good defender of all four, Shaw could do with going back to ManU and learning how to produce that all-important quick attacking passing ability and end product, which leaves Gibbs as the main rival. And, on current form, I don't think he is quite as good.
Besides, who is part of the defence with 5 league goals conceded, and the odd goal and assist in the plus column..?
Shaw was a bit of a curates egg yesterday. Generally he is a good player and the hope lies in him being so young....said it before and will say it again (try and stop me ), he should have stayed here. He needs to be brought on carefully...not thrown in the deep end...he hasn't got the sense of a JWP.

Agreed. JWP is also very sensible and a nice lad.
