Well, I must admit that Wales looked completely toothless without your boy Ramsey. On the other hand, Jose and Cedric looked good
Ramsey's absence made a bigger impact than expected. It goes to show how good Ramsey is. Saying that, i think Wales wasn't as fluent against Portugal and lost their rhythm totally in the second half. They've played much better in the tournament. I wonder if this will affect Wenger's decision on where to play Ramsey? He played an advanced role and did really well. Problem is, the midfield area is very congested for us and the only real position that is vacant is the right wing (Sanchez being on the left).
The main issue was the loss of composure after the goals. Bale especially was overly tense, but even then he made a couple of deadly runs. He took out Bruno Alvez pretty easily and should have stayed more on the right wing. Also, had Wales started off quicker and more incisive, the result may have been different. Ramsey's absence did not help and his darting runs, interchange play and passing was sorely missed. Williams and Allen were particularly poor.
I think it was a big mistake to select the safer option of king over Williams to replace Ramsey. Ramsey has been our best player in this competition because he's been able to playmake, has had a free role to get onto Bale's passes and been able to put Bale and Robson-Kanu into space. I feel once we lost him we needed someone else who was going to stretch the Portugal defence and run onto Bale's passes. Instead we had only Bale who was creating but he was also the only one running at the defence and shooting from distance. It was then too easy, after the 1st 40mins, for Portugal to freeze him out of the game. We also missed Ben Davies' passing from the back and his recycling of possession, though Collins did well defensively. It was a shame that Bale had his poorest game at the same time as we missed Ramsey and Davies. But it was overall a poor performance, we were just a little bit off all over - crosses a yard too high/far, a pass a foot too long/short or a bit too hard/soft, runs made too soon. and as GC says as a result set pieces looked our only likely way of scoring. Once Portugal scored two goals so quickly it was essentially game over. A shame on the night, but they've fought epically, achieved so much, done the whole nation proud and even in their worst game against Portugal weren't disgraced and matched them for the majority of the match. It was an epic ride and they've proved they are heroes! Cymru am byth! Please don't take me home!
William Carvalho though. Too glad we never signed this guy. It's rare to see him actually run. May be a big guy but barely makes a tackle.
I thought the Calttenberg who gave Kos the handball WRONGLY nearly the end kind of changed the game...... 2 mins after the Yellow card, Kos could have taken out Eder prior to the goal being scored, but because he was on a yellow he didnt!
Awful tournament won by an awful team. Think Spain vs Italy was the only genuinely good game after the groups, maybe Wales Belguim
It's quite telling that one of the most boring, defensive teams won the tournament. A far cry from the Portugal teams that wowed us in the early 2000's. But France blew it in my opinion, they didn't do enough to force the win and instead played the game that suited Portugal. Portugal won the tournament in true Greece fashion.
The only good thing I can say about them is they didn't cheat anywhere near as much as previous Portugal teams, except for Moutinho in the final
I've enjoyed going round the boards reading the collective bitterness against Portugal. Like anyone would've given two ****s if England had won in the same manner. Congratulations to them is what I say, fully deserved
