Mayuka starts. Nigel obviously hates his guts...

First start and was the only player to run at the team even if he looked clumsy says it all.

A raw talent that is probably best deployed from the bench currently. He was good against Villa when he came on and they were tiring. Hopefully he will play a bit for Zambia and get his confidence back.

How can a poor first start demonstrate why he hasn't played?. The whole team was crap not just him.

Just home. Yeah was disappointed with him, but he went for it and tried to get at them. Sadly a bit predictable.

I don't know if it was nerves or the pitch but his first touch was horrendous.

Still, I don't think many played well (Shaw was impressive, again) and we move onto Fulham.

Was that position where he is at his best? I thought of him as more of a Right wing attacker, which is where Puncheon was playing, the starting eleven to me seemed very unbalanced, we have some good talented players, but they aren't playing where they are most potent.

He's on African Cup of Nations duty from Jan 19 until potentially Feb 10. Zambia should almost certainly get to 1/4 Finals looking at their group, and that's Feb 3.

Sorry, what? He was the only player running into space. Once he came off, with Ricky marked out of it, we offered no threat.

In my opinion, Mayuka's issue was two fold:

    1. The players are used to playing a more patient game with strikers who come and look for the ball to feet with their back to goal. He is not good with his back to goal.

    2. Due to his pace and the runs he tried to make, the midfielders were frequently trying to play the ball in behind defenders early and giving possession away. We have t been playing that way and those passes weren't good.

His pace will give us a useful, different option, it just wasn't happening against Sunderland. Don't forget that Sunderland are a tough, stubborn, unadventurous team.

Agree with this. He deserves more of a chance.

I agree, but just not in the same system as Saturday. I just don't know what we trying to achieve by playing 4-4-2, with Gaston wide left and Mayuka through the middle.

I was not happy that Gaston was on the left. Play in the bloody middle! That's where he's most effective. Play Mayuka on the left and see what happen's. If it doesn't work change it.

Bemused me too. Only reason I can think of is that we did the same against Reading.

It felt like Lambo and Mayuka lacked experience playing together. One would pass to the other only to discover that his strike partner had not moved into position after all. If they played together a lot, they'd probably build up an understanding of each other's play and would be a more effective strike force.

Think this is a good point. Cut the guy some slack. He's hardly played so let's give him a chance.
