most sentences these days are low but then some judge gets the hump and some one pays . The recent rioters got much stiffer sentencing than normal to stop escalation of the situation .

Yeah I purposely steered away from the rioters, because it's not really the best example, because what gets missed is if they hadn't have come down hard, then someone would have got killed eventually. But plenty of other examples out there, where the sentencing is just bonkers.

The real problem though is the Law not the courts ... judges can't go beyond sentencing guidelines and 'tariffs' ...
Laws needs changing ... and PDQ ...much sterner sentences for nonce crimes ...also for rape gangs etc ...

I've no problem here directly with what Keir has claimed but indirectly I can see the implications of such gifts. Some jobs are quite simply not allowed to accept gifts and for a reason...
Some jobs have policies that restrict or prohibit the acceptance of gifts, including:

- Legality: It is compliant with relevant laws.
- Accords with stakeholder perception: The activity would not be viewed unfavourably by stakeholders were it made known to them.
- Proportionate: The value and nature of the expenditure is not disproportionate to the occasion.

I think where Keir Starmer is treading a fine line is under obligation. Could some of the gifts that have been received fallen under that category, hmm...possibly. And therefore to avoid all doubt and accusations, would he not be better to refuse them in the first place.
I don't personally give a shhite if someone has paid for KS to go and watch Arsenal in the best seats of the house, he's the leader of our country, like all leaders they are seen in high profile public places, not a problem, but to say it's all ok, I'm not quite so comfortable with, it has to be questioned, not to point score but just to ensure the level of integrity someone promises materialises when they are in power.
I heard something about someone paid for some clothing for his wife, I don't know if this is true, but in a month when you've taken away government handouts, it's not a good look. He must see how that would look to people that taking away them handouts from really affects.
Mere questions, not condemnation and if he feels comfortable with that, so be it - but Angela Rayner having come from a council estate, would probably relate to it better than he would, and I've not seen her on the telly for a long while, maybe she is keeping her head down....sometimes the silence says it all.

The longest-running measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in September, raising concerns about whether government rhetoric about Budget "pain" has spooked people.
GfK's Consumer Confidence Index had been recovering after years of rolling crises, higher interest rates and inflation gradually creeping up.
But since the end of August, it fell by seven points to -20 overall, which GfK has said does not provide "encouraging news" for the UK's new government.
Some economists have linked the drop to officials' warnings of a "painful" Budget at the end of August.
There were "major corrections" - or double digit falls - for consumers' perception of the general economic situation, as well as how likely they were to make bigpurchases.
People's view of their own personalfinances in the future has also turned negative again, down nine points to -3.
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had previously hailed the turn in this measure positive as a sign of an economic turnaround.
The fall was unexpected as it came in the aftermath of an interest rate cut from the Bank of England, potentially easing the pressure faced by some homeowners.
But other measures of consumer confidence have dipped too.
"Despite stable inflation and the prospect of further cuts in the base interest rate, this is not encouraging news for the UK’s new government," said Neil Bellamy,consumer insights director at GfK.
He suggested that following the withdrawal of winter fuel payments and warnings of "further difficult decisions" to come on tax,spending and welfare, consumers are "nervously" awaiting the upcoming Budgeton 30 October.
