Because they are picked up by border force and then taken to hotels.

Homelessness happens in a much less straight forward way, some people sofa surf, some go under the radar. Some live in temp accom and then get kicked out, some live in shelters or YMCA accom.

But every local council has a statutory duty to try and find accommodation for rough sleepers. So you’ll find that a lot of them are already living temporarily in hotels and B&Bs etc. And btw that eligibility criteria with depend on your UK immigration status

Agree its not to do with immigration but we had a hosing crisis and homelessness problems with lots of it due to mental health issues long before the boat people but all that got done was funding being cut for those people. Just a shame they don't seem to give MH in this country the help it needs, it seems there's only funding for those that seem beyond help, where the ones at the bottom of the rung are brushed aside, theyre the ones that can be helped before they become the next hopeless cases.

I agree that a lot of mental heath and homelessness intervention is done reactively, when proactive work would probably prevent a lot of it reaching crisis point. But a lot of that comes down again to local councils being strapped of cash, which affects all public services. That is due still a hangover from years of austerity, which was a political choice, to make the taxpayer pay for the failings of the banks and wealthy investors who gambled the country’s economy and lost.

As for migrants, if the govt didn’t house them in temp hotels, they would just create another homelessness problem. I know people look at this issue in a bit of a binary way, I.e why do migrants get accommodation and veterans don’t. But the reality is more complex than that. As I mentioned, every local council has a statutory duty to assess homeless people and try to find them accommodation. A lot of the time that comes down to housing being in hotels and b&bs at huge cost to local councils (and private property owners gain) whilst they try and find them permanent housing, but like Archers said, our stock of council houses were largely sold off and we’ve not built anywhere near the amount needed in the last 20-30 years

I must point out it has already been tried and rejected because the barracks were classed "not fit to live in" despite them being perfectly good enough for squaddies and their familys,

The Uk no longer has a surplus of barracks as previous governments have embarked on a sell off that supposedly puts any money from these sales back into the military coffers. In addition naval bases such as HMS Collingwood in Portsmouth are leased out to large employers such as Network Rail and EDF as apprentice schools / accommodation.
The barracks you mention as being fit for soldiers but not immigrants no longer exist and will cost millions to re-establish anything that resembles a barracks.
